So big model company's at the time didn't want to make say for instance a 1/25 March 83c or the Gurney Pepsi Challenger, but they could make DW's Mountian Dew car or other similar 80's Nascar stuff as well as every other thing in the world it seems. Not bashing cause I built planes and hot rods just like you.
I thought Nascar started to come to real prominence after the Indy split..and all we got was indy castings from 88 and up? Why this big miss from say 1980 to 87? Seven years ? Was interest (or from a sales standpoint) beginning to wan? There were lots of classic stuff produced (Eagle-McLaren) but my question here is why nothing in that time frame?

NASCAR cars are all the same car and rarely changed - model companies got a lot of mileage out of the tooling. Indy cars changed every year and frankly didn't sell as well as NASCAR kits.

We, as Indycar modelers, are a small group and what we like is irrelevant to the whole model kit market. From a business standpoint, it needs to make sense to invest over 5 figures (Or more) into a kit. I have a friend that does plastic injection parts for sprinklers, the metal molds are HUGE, heavy, and expensive just for a small plastic part. It's beyond me why AMT didn't make anything from 80-87? I'm sure the sales numbers of the Penske pc6 kit was the reason why.

After Rutherford won in 80 - by that time the PC6 kits had been out for awhile, I expected - and waited for - a Chaparral kit. 42 years later I'm still waiting for it. BTW... the biggest story of that era was Foyt winning #4... and nobody did a kit of that. That right there tells you everything you need to know.

I find it interesting Tamiya never did a modern Indycar 1/20 kit after Sato's 2 Indy wins. Considering they did the 1993 T93 Lola back in the day.
I get 1/20 vs 1/25th scale, still.

I thought they would - Japanese engine, Japanese driver... right up their alley. MFH was quick to jump on those. After his second win I was working with them within 24 hours (I provided reference photos from victory lane and post-race tech).
