What type of car was run at Indy in 1996 and 1997? Photos of those types?

Different cars entirely those two years. ‘96 they used they used the old CART style cars. Reynard, Lola, old Cosworth a and Menard buick stock blocks. 97 for the Indy 500 they had switched to the new IRL cars. Dallara, G-force, etc. I’m on my phone and not sure how I can post photos as I usually do that on my computer

Kyle is spot on! 1996 was run with all 1995 and previous CART style chassis Lolas mostly powered by Cosworths (and this one Merc) Lola Menards (the big engine hump for the HUGE plenum) Reynards 1997 under the new IRL chassis rules G-Force Dallara I was never good on telling a '97 G-Force from a '97 Dallara. Glad they got different air intakes for '98 to make it easier on me LOL Jordan

97 was also the change to "stock block" engines, so everybody ran either an Aurora or Nissan motor. It was also the last time I bothered to watch an Indycar race for the next 15 odd years, lol.

Incidentally those were my first two 500s. As a kid I didn’t really get the split at first or notice the difference in cars so much. I did notice the cars didn’t sound as “cool” that second year. We didn’t necessarily pick a side in my house. Dad watched both series and F1 and so did I. TV made it painfully clear how much prettier the CART cars are though.
