Even retrospectively I can appreciate what a giant of the sport this man was. A sad loss that will be felt keenly by many of you I am sure. But what a life! Certain he will be long remembered. RIP.

He was one of my favorites. Fast, smooth, clean, a gentleman in and out of the car. What a year for the Unser family.
RIP Al, we'll miss you.

What I liked about Al's driving style was he was smooth and drove a methodical race.
You wouldn't see him all day, but towards the end of the race, there he was running strong, after half the field crash or blew up.

One of my favorites. I met him when I was really young when my dad built some big block Chevy boat engines for him in the mid seventies and he came down to the shop to see them. Truly a legend.

Watched Al & Mario in the Viceroy team dirt champ cars at the Syracuse Mile in 1974, 100 laps of nose to tail & side by side racing, Al won because Mario ran a couple laps short on fuel. STILL one of the best and most exciting races I've ever seen. He was a true racer thru & thru.

From this past May, this turned out to be the last photo I took of Al. From what I've heard since his passing, he was in worse health than he was letting on. So glad he was able to receive this honor. RIP.

Which car in 2:48 (with an (rear?) front wing). The PC11. Al ran the PC11 most of the year but finished up the last six or so races with a PC10B. It was one of his Championship years with Penske. Jordan
