So, I decided to take on a challenge that is often overlooked. The Scale of 1/64 in diecast. I was truly inspired by all the builders here and thought I could toss my hat into the ring but in a way that's a bit different. Now I know there have been the usual suspects of mfg...Racing Champions, Onyx, and others too numerous to mention. Most manufacturing was done on cheap castings, with very poor detailed graphics. The only bright spots being Johnny Lightning Indy series cars. With prices for 1/43 being what they are, what are your alternatives?
There are very good quality resin slot car bodies made by passionate builders, but, they are made for slot cars. Please know I'm not (what is the kids saying nowadays?) Throwing Shade? Just that there should be a bridge to the gap in diecast.
What else? Buying the cheap cars, stripping them down and make them into cars not produced? Ok then...If this is what we got in diecast form, lets tweek it a bit so it fills these criteria...
1. Shape and Details - Shouldn't look chunky. Not overly detailed but enough to look absolutely smashing on your shelf 2. Easy to modify -Resin body on diecast frame? Full modifying like on youtube with hot wheels? Simple body swaps? 3. Cost - Can you pick up a couple cheap donor cars to do this? Paint/decals/supplies? 4. Collectability -Make a mold from prototypes to cast resin bodies to install and further your collection..
Those are some broad strokes, sooo let's dive in..
