Nice build. I did the same kit for Bobby Unser #1 Car.

One kit I haven’t been able to add to my stash yet. Looks good. I like it!

I don't think I've ever had a kit fight me the way this one did. Nice job on yours

Thanks all. I used an Indycals sheet and Tamiya rattle cans. They aren’t perfect color matches but they’re what were in stock and could be delivered quickly! I used TS-26 Pure White, TS-51 Racing Blue and TS-85 Bright Mica Red.
I also won the MPC Hall of Fame set on eBay recently for under $35 (‘74 McLaren, ‘63 Watson, 63’ Lotus) and plan on starting with the McLaren. I already built the Offy and it mares it’s way into the background of some of these pics. For the MPC kits, any advice is welcome! I know there are some resin upgrade parts available. Also, I may try to convert or poorly pass the ‘63 Lotus off as the ‘65 winner. I am undecided.

Always a good way to start the day by logging in to find another Mears build. Nice job on a tough kit. Thank you for sharing.

I always loved the box art / photo of that set with the 3 cars in front of the IMS museum, which to me also looks like a 1/25 model of the Museum looks like that set came out in 1988 by ERTL.

My advice, if you want a 65 winner, buy the IMC kit and struggle with it. It's horrible but at least it's the right car. The Mclaren is a joke as far as OOB. Buy the upgrades from Micheal (Indycals), money well spent and you'll have a great finished product. Mine got half built and put back in the box, maybe I'll finish it one day. My Watson is pride of place in my collection. The kit was way beyond what MPC normally made, ahead of it's time. It's a difficult and time consuming build but well worth it, AM parts would help and are available. You can even buy a complete 3D printed chassis but the cost is horrendous. With all of them I'd say at least buy the resin tires, although I didn't use them on this build (will for later versions).
cheers Paul

Just an FYI for everyone, the "MPC" Indy set is a re-issue of kits that were all done by AMT originally.

Paul, that’s a lovely Watson and a kit I’d totally forgotten about but now I’m going to have to find. Very cool
