Yup. Quite right.
The JPS models I have done in various scales just never match up. The fact that Tamiya and Hasegawa did the Lotus 79 at the same scale and did not end up with the same proportions says it all. Switching scale with all the manufacturers needs to build in all the various tolerances will lead to 'distortion', however slight. Guess we have all been there with anything that has trim or key lines when you start deviating from the 'regular' scale.
You know what you are going into when you set out to be a scale deviant!
And Dan. Thanks for the heads up on the Ford Poppy Red. The Mustang centre not a long way from me who sorted out my Ford GT40 kit Emberglo paint are now on preping the shipping of that specific colour for me.

Bringing this up again. Hope the faithful do not mind. Progress. 1979 Foyt Parnelli. I have researched the forum for past builds and any info but not much on this car. Did wonder if I had missed the boat on a 25th or 43rd scale kit from days gone by. No plans or drawings to work from so just eyeballed. With these the proportions might be off here and there given the need for working engine/axle etc. Start with a PC4 resin body which gives me the chassis fixing point and start chopping away.... It runs so that is one good thing. Got it to the what I term ' the pre vandalising bit' where I start painting it. Three areas I had to compromise on. Front suspension. Top wish bones should meet the wheel hub near the middle but guide blade takes up ideal mounting points. Rear end. Sculpted tapered area on rear of body should be smaller but have to accommodate the pinion and cog which is also why the oil tank (?) is beyond the rear body work instead of under it. Would be nice to have the chassis mounted higher into the body given the low profile of this car in reality but will have to run with this ride height given I cannot gouge any more resin out from under it without losing structural integrity. Just waiting for the paint and a couple of other bits like radiator mesh for the side pods to come in the door.

Fantastic conversion to a very credible Parnelli. Well done. Now make one for me in 1/25. ๐๐

Ah... One of these in 1/25th.
All joking aside, when this started to look like a passable VPJ6 I did start thinking what is stopping me from trying to do one or two in 25th.
I do not have a scaled plan to follow and I know nothing about resin casting. 3d printing? Maybe one day. But I keep bouncing around the thought of a cricut doing all the accurately sized and perfectly symetrical panel work and then going for it. It is a medium I am very happy to work in for now. Doubt I would ever make a 'master' strong enough to be cast from though. But then who knows.
Inevitably there are holes in any model collection given the history of the sport, and I cannot find this Parnelli anywhere at any scale. The 1978 and 1979 would do very nicely for followers of Foyt, Ongais and was it Unser? I always had an admiration for the look of the 1978 Ongais car that led for so long at Brands Hatch in 1978.
I ever take the plunge at 1/25th you will be the first to know........

Done for now. Quick aside from the interesting stuff going on in the forum. Not easiest of births. Coulda done with a few epidurals along the way. Happy with it but can do better. Front wheels should be higher. Will try to sort that with the next one I do. Means the front can be lower to the track and look more purposeful. Have no idea what is on top of the engine cover. Cannot identify all the decals from the ref I have. Indycals and a couple of my own on here. Thought about running the leads from the engine cover. If I do that I will have to go back and do all the others. Want to use narrower rears with the same radius to look more USAC than F1 but cannot source any yet. When I do I can finish the hubs correctly and just swap out the rubber over time. I know the decals on the tires were opposite to each other in reality but done now just for appearance. Did think about applying speed blured tire markings but would look odd when standing still and you do not notice when running on the track. Kinda like doing the radial blur on a propeller image and then onto a clear disc for a plane kit in flight. Wish I could get a consistently good result when painting and laquering. Temperature? The product? Me? Anyone got any Klear on sale in Europe? OK Shut up now. Looking at the others I have now done I will do the Ongais car from 1979 and maybe a few more in time. There is one more I would like to do that I have virtually no ref for. The Mike Mosley Eagle from that year. He finished 3rd and seemed like the quiet man of the field. If anyone has any decent pics I could look at I would appreciate it very much. Anyone has plans of this Parnelli and the Eagle then all the better. Will ask for them in a PM so as not to take up open forum time if that is OK. I will only come back with more of this kinda thing once I have done a few more and have a few rows to photograph. Thank you to those who helped with this puppy. So much for the quick aside! Now where did I put that March 85c......

Shouldn't admit it but I have bottled it when it comes to turning my attention to the 1/25th March 85c. I just do not trust myself to finish it in terms of the painting and lacquering to the level I would want. That one is off to a mate who builds kits professionally. Trade off for me doing him an illustration. So. Thanks to Jordan and the ref he posted I cracked into this. Gotta lot of sanding to do and decals to design and rear end to build yet but have to crack on because as from Tuesday I am back on shifts thru Christmas and the New Year holidays. Obscure car I guess but given my current project I thought I should give it a go. I have watched and re watched the indy 500 from 1979 and kept seeing this white thing buzzing around the track in company with Mears and Bobby Unser and Ongais but not really mentioned. Then again I am sure I am not watching the FULL broadcast. Mike Mosley finally got a mention when he unlapped himself on the white flag lap. And I then found out he only just missed out on second by 2 and a bit seconds as Foyt ground to a halt at the line. The broadcast seems to focus on the big names as it should given it is also talking to the casual viewer, including men we have sadly lost this year, but acknowledged masters of the sport who I will commemorate in my own way in related model subjects at some point in the near future. As for Mike Mosley, he does strike me as having been a nearly man but if Gurney took him then there must have been some talent there. Strikes me as cruelly ironic when the sports loses a driver in a road traffic accident if what I read is accurate. Decided to tackle it for two reasons. 3rd placed finisher at that race (his only Indy finish?) and it is a unique shape even for those days which I thought was worth trying to tackle. That pushed me into scratch building the thing and mounting the engine to it rather than building onto an existing body. One step beyond for me but giving it a go. Know that the engine ancillaries may not be entirely accurate but a few clues looking at other engines of the time. But if I get this close to right then I hope to have the gumption to tackle more in a similar vein. Guess the construction methods of that era lends itself to what I am 'toying' with right now.

Love the job you are doing on the 79 Eagle. This was an evolution on the 78 Arco Graphite car. One that I had done a resin kit years ago. Great to see more and more scratch building being done on the board. You will be surprise at what you can achieve by building models in this fashion. If you dont like what you started its very inexpensive to just change it. Another story about this car was in the previous year Bobby Unser drove this modified version of the Arco car at the final three races of the year where it was painted up black and silver. Cant wait to see the finished project.

Appreciate that coming from a 'Jedi' master.
I have of course scoured the Indycals website, whistling everytime I see that 1978 Eagle wondering who put it out. Now I know! And the 1978 Lola? Was that a Silver City product? Probably give both a go one day at this scale and not averse to exploring the subjects at 1/25th, possibly using an AMT PC6 kit as a starting point, but it would be a bit left field doing them this way and off in the future somewhere.
(just wondering if this should be folded into the main thread?).

Was supposed to be back on duty for the holidays but things are not great here. Both myself and my Wife have covid. We think it must be this Omicron variety but not be told yet. Isolating and Christmas Day with the family off the agenda. Have to admit not feeling top hole but can take my mind off things getting on with this thing. Found a couple of pics of the Bobby Unser end of 1978 season car. Well sexy in black. But this is my 1979 project so getting on with it. The back end isn't spot on as again I have to work around the gearing pinion and axle but it will do. And rear supports thicker than should be to not worry about them shaking off once it is all up and running. Turned my attention to the driver figure and helmet (with thanks to Jordan again for that top reference) and doing the front wheel hubs as best I can given no one does the Eagle spec wheel inserts at this scale. Just waiting on some Theodore Racing decals to drop in the door from Indycals to get this done with some of my own decals and a 32nd scale 1977 F1 Ensign that was driven by Patrick Tambay that I am also working on finishing now I found this particular resource. I am not going to preach, but do me a favour chaps. Do not get blase about this covid thing. I have been out there facing the travelling public through this whole thing for the past year and three quarters and managed to keep clear of catching anything. But this new variant. Blimey! I know you are all taking the precautions you see fit but honestly. Don't drop your guard. I didn't and it still got me. Just hoping this is as bad as it will get but still feel like a used set of qualifying tires! Glad I can get stuck into something that takes my mind off things.

This particular game really is a two part build. Trying to take what I have learnt from this forum in terms of accurate static model approach and apply it to this other realm where bog standard simple lids are used most of the time. Just wish I had a far steadier hand at the mo.

So sorry about your unwilling participation in this craziness. I hope you and your wife are feeling now as bad as you will and from now on each day is better.
Hand looks mighty steady to me. Did you hand paint his name? WOW!

Sorry you are down with COVID, Joe. I hope you and the Mrs are feeling better now.
Your Mosley (Mike not Max LOL) looks great, glad I could help with references.
Sorry I missed your email and glad you were able to get on and post this impressive update. Your 1979 grid is getting filled our really well!

Hand looks mighty steady to me. Did you hand paint his name? WOW! My printer has a real problem printing tight text at 6 point or lower even at 1200 dpi. It did not do a decent job of the arrow on the helmet top so had to try and clean up by hand. The text on the front was done using the printer but did need some TLC to get t cleaned up. Lumpy and bumpy coz it took a few goes to get it just so. Daft really given you do not really see it with the naked eye. Not mine anyway!

OK. Tis done. Got this one finished up Christmas Eve. Last day of my 'self isolation'. Sure I may have missed a couple of details and maybe the rear view mirror mounts should have been longer but I think it is OK for something worked up from pictures and not scaled plans. Glad I did it given this car finished 3rd that year and it was Mike Mosley's only Indy finish. Had thoughts of doing an end of 1978 season version but yet to decide if and at what scale. In the background the next step in this project. I have the decals and just need the time to finish that Chaparral. Whilst I have done a fair few cars from this one race already it does feel like there are two more I should do but does leave me with a quandry. Feels like I should really add the Penske PC6 of Gordon Johncock and the Parnelli of Danny Ongais. That would give me the top six finishers and three notable runners that DNFed. Nine from the 35 runners is enough. Problem is both these models were based on PC4 bodies and I have the last two available. There are no more...... Was thinking of going back and doing a few from 1978 and a few from 1977 but if I do these last two drivers mentioned it would mean no Penske PC6 from these other years. And it would mean going through a repeat process in their building rather than going off and doing something new to keep my own interest up. I will take a break from these for now and consider where to take it. In the meantime Santa was very nice to me and left a Cricut Maker under the tree. First question is how thick a sheet of styrene can it cut out?......

Chaps. As a postcript to this last build I have been messing about with the Cricut I was gifted. After some simple tests I pushed the thing to chop out my first model piece. It will not be the be all and end all and I will not be using it for everything I need. But it came out clean and perfectly symmetrical from the uploaded image I drew up based on my original hand drawn plans. Am going to see if it will score panel lines, punch in rivet marks and cut Naca ducts and see where it takes me. Given the way I have been working of late it has the potential to be very useful at any scale......

Love the Eagle and impressed with what the Cricut did.
I bought one on Cyber Monday but the website was a scam. Trying to get my money back from bank/Visa before looking into buying one again.
