The tour of resin makers kits continue… 11 years ago, I built this kit…the pictures are in photobucket jail; evidently forever…I can’t remember how I came across Fiotti…he was in Brazil and I don’t think he casts resin anymore…it was a fun build until the end and it became “the Maser from hell.” I was not satisfied with the cowling and windscreen, and the wheels, while beautiful, seemed too small…last, but not least, I found out after it was done that it was refrigerator white; not off white…it remained on the shelf until the great Flood, and was floated and then dropped while moving…so I will begin again and try to make it much better… Ooops! A photo with Fangio talking to Jo Bonnier… Comments, questions welcome! Thanks for stopping by! Tim

Would love to have heard the conversation between Fangio and Bonnier. Is Bonnier holding up both hands? Some pretty shoddy paint and body work on the real 250F. Obviously Fangio usually wears socks when he wears shorts. The 250F is maybe my favorite race car. I have a 1/43 MFH kit that I really need to build.

Hi all! Gotti seemed to copy a Merit or Strombecker body. Your car looks great. I always wanted to do Bonnier's Maserand paint those stripes by brush...a really bad brush. I read he paid Centro-Sud for it. By the way all my photos are in Fotki jail also.

Hi Tim, That is a cool photo of the car and drivers. Of course in your rebuild you’re going to add the winglets, barge boards and DRS. 👨🔧That’ll really improve the shape! 🤣🤣 Do I have too much time on my hands? You bet!

Dear Dan: Thank you for your interest! Perhaps these photos will help… there are 18 winglets left to be attached… This is the early stage…the front wing will need to be cut and curled into 12 pieces… There is NO DRS on this wing…I am pretty sure that was not mandated until 1959 IIRC… This will be a challenge, but pales in comparison to your Le Monstre… Tim TMTOMH

I have always loved the Maserati 250 F…Stirling Moss called it the best front engined car he ever raced…if you are like me, my mind goes to the 250F Fangio drove to his greatest victory: the 1957 German GP at the Ring… However, the 250F was released at the beginning of the 2.5 liter rule change in 1954…It would win 2 victories in 1954, helping Fangio to his title…2 more victories in 1956, and it won 4 in 1957…it raced through 1960, until the 1.5 liter formula…Fangio’s car was a 4 year old design, rebodied and reworked like several others… The original… Doing research, you can find several different types: extended nose versus stubby nose…single exhaust or double exhaust…different hood louvers: some with Gill slits.,,hood scoop on some, rounded solid on others…different windscreen cowlings…different splash guards or no guards… Bonnier’s Centro Sud entry was not the latest variant… This is his teammate Masten Gregory’s car; notice the differences… And even Carroll Shelby drove one… It also carried this livery only once: at the 1957 Pescara Grand Prix…probably why the paint job is shoddy… where I am… You may be cool, but you’ll never be as cool as Jo Bonnier wearing a short sleeved shirt and watch while driving a G P car… Comments, questions welcome! Thanks for stopping by! Tim

Very cool Tim. I'd love to build the Carroll Shelby car. Where can a person get one of those bodies? Or can you?

Questions and answers… Jordan: I spent a LONG time trying to decide about rivet heads…too tiny (for my eyes) and too much trouble…the holes in the tank alone would be a major hassle…I have tried Archer before with “so so” results…read an article about this issue that said the rivet holes are to fool the eye…interesting that this was never mentioned 11 years ago, it was just accepted…now you can get rivet heads, bolt heads, etc….I need to learn Jaunjo’s method… Gary: Good luck on a Fiotti…Merit could be modified (I’d look for a glue bomb on EBay)…Strombecker would work also, but are Very Expensive…strange since it is considered by many to be the quintessential front engine F1 car??? Paul: You noticed the mirrors too? It looks like he slapped them wacky! Got no idea why they are pointed like they are…
This car is so cool and like most resin kits: Easier The Second Time Around! Tim

Hi Tim, After a lot of thinking, 🤔 I’ve decided I like the non winglet version better! 👍 You are absolutely right about the 250 F being the best looking car. And we can add a shirtsleeve and watch to the Tim file of iconic racing images. Dan

Moving right along… I have done several things that I had NOT noticed before: removed second bump on hood, filled side vents and made hood vents, added bump by cockpit, added rear scoops…Wheeeeeew! Hand painted stripes just like the real car…difficult but it came out ok… Strange to try to make it look “a little sloppy” since I have been struggling to spray paint bodies perfectly for years… Comments, questions are welcome…thanks for looking! Dang Tim.....that is really looking great! All that extra work you've done really makes this come to life. The hand painted stripes look waaaay to cool. The driver figure sure looks good. Where did you find that Helmet/head for the driver?

Hand painted stripes and weathering add a lot of realism at your build. Can't wait to see it finished

Gary: I’m not sure but I think it is an old Etzel driver figure and head…I bet I have figures from 5-6 different resin casters… Another Etzel: Sam Hanks I think Etzel: Tony Bettenhausen Monogram Indy racer: Phil Walters Immense Miniatures: Tazio Nuvolari R/M Reynard: Bryan Herta Lance Sellers: A J Foyt Unknown: George Robson Unknown: Louie Meyer Unknown: Mauri Rose I enjoy putting figures in my builds. My skills have improved even as my eyesight diminishes. I have graduated to very fine brushes and Archer eyeballs. Fred Lombardo was an inspiration:his figures are impeccable…I wish someone would repost some of his figures… Tim

Did Fiotti have the Centro Sud decals or did you make them. I'd love to do a Centro Sud BRM P57!

Patrick: Fiotti had incorrect colored logo(for this car)… If you Google “Centro Sud logo” you’ll get several…. This is what I sent Gary; he lightened them up… I’m sure he can do whichever you want…it is strange to me that a sports car is in the logo for open wheelers??? Tim

Centro Sud was a starting point for many F1 drivers and helped Lorenzo Bandini get noticed by Ferrari. Let me know how the new decals are. I'm very interested. -Patrick

Gentlemen: This one has crossed the finish line…people to thank… Gary, the decal maker, who puts up with my mistakes (and late ordering) by giving tremendous customer service! And my Catalonian buddy Juanjo! We have swapped parts and a kit, and he surprises me with an occasional gift…note the wheels/tires below… The far left is 3D printed, the middle are Fiotti’s from the kit, and on the right, Jaunjo’s 3D printed 1957 tires with hand laced spokes…also note the sizes increasing from left to right…I am going to use the Fiotti’s on Fangio’s Maserati 4CLT from 1949… And now the finished shots…Bonnier’s workplace… Hand painted stripes just like the 1:1… A beautiful car, even though it was uncompetitive at Pescara… Hard to believe the 1957 Pescara GP was the only time this livery was used… Side view… Other side… This build would never have been this good without Fiotti, Gary, and Juanjo! Thanks a million! Comments, questions welcome! Tim

Bonniers pose looks very much pix I’ve seen of him racing cars like this. He was a cool guy. Teamed with Gurney at Porsche and with Phil Hill at Chaparral. Good buds with Moss in those years.
