Bobby Unser , one of the most successful American drivers of all time Passed away at his home in New Mexico Sunday night. Bobby had a long history as a multiple Pikes Peak record holder, Indy Car and Open wheel driver and even as a sports car driver. It was Bobby who insisted my late father, John Hale take the 1973 Eagle out in testing at Ontario 1972, after my dad fixed a suspension problem athat almost shelved the entire project. My Dad ran laps at 202mph before handing the car over to Bobby who also ran laps in the same range. Bobby drove for AAR & Dan Gurney from 1969 until 1979 winning quite a few events. In later years he coached Rookies at Indy every year helping them gain their licenses to run the 500 and showing them the right way to drive Indy. Our Home will be sad this week and Our Condolences go out to the entire Unser Family. R.I.P. Bobby .....

Thats an "L" for sure. Told it like it was. Fast. Smart. R.i.p racer. We will miss you. I am grateful i atleast got to see some of his career. Sort of his brothers opposite. Not shy, unafraid to speak his mind. Super talented. Enjoy Al while we can.

One of the few that probably transcended the sport into the consciousness of the public over here in Europe. And that was before he did his stint in the commentary booth.
The only podcast interview I ever went back and listened to a second time was one featuring him.
Don't think I need say more than that......

My mother also passed this morning. She loved going to the 500 - like Bobby, she was quite the talker as well, and I can't help but envision the two of them talking each other's ears off in the "new arrivals" line: "Aren't you Bobby Unser?" "Why yes. Yes I am" (and I know you heard that in Bobby's voice just as I typed it )

I loved your tribute to her on Facebook, Michael. Makes me sad I never met her. Thank you for your story of dementia, we are dealing with that in my family and it is heartbreaking. We will be praying for your family's comfort in this season of loss.

Your post made me feel sad for you but smile at the same time given the thought of a lively chat in a new arrivals queue.
Wishing you strength over the coming days.
My sincerest sympathies.

A sad day all around. Bobby was one of a kind as, I am sure, was Michael's mother. May they both rest in peace. Jim

Uncle Bobby and Sam Posey at Indy, what a pair! Bobby also did some of the Canadian CART races for CBC with Brian Williams - they were a great paring, but it didn't have the contrarian nature (to put it nicely) that Bobby and Sam did that made them so entertaining.

Yep, hard-scrabble Bobby vs. prep-school Sam, diametrically opposed opinions about EVERYTHING! It made for some interesting listening, the race was almost secondary.

Michael I'm sorry for your loss. Remember the good times it helps.
Bobby was and will always be one of the greatest drivers. It really makes me feel even older than I am. So many of the drivers that I watched when I was younger are gone. Ralph NESMRA
