I have a question about the Tamiya 1/18 Lola t-160ts. Is there no other decal scheme available besides the one in the box?? Was this car only raced in those colors?

I know of no other decals available for it. However several paint schemes appeared on the T-160.

Really outside of my wheelhouse on this one. Indycals did replacement decals for this kit indycals.net/decals/canam/68tslolat160.html but found nothing in 1/18 on eBay. I have always liked this kit and wondered if the driver figure would be a good donor for the Tamiya 1/18 Porsche 910 or some diecasts. Would love to see it built here. The initial open wheel builds only stance on this board is gone. Love to have open wheel builders come here and show whatever they are working on. Any building is fun to watch. Jordan

Basically, the Lola T-160 thru 163 shared the same body, the rear was the most changed panel with wheel wells changing also. The T-160 series started with Surtees but quickly grew to all the big teams having one or two. Mark Donohue (blue) had a beauty but it was not successful one of Penskes few failures. Gurney (dark blue) had two, his self and Swede Savage. Chuck Parsons (orange) was probably the most successful. All grew a wing with the T-161/2/3. Jack Hinkle a Mid-West region SCCA racer had a PRISTINE Red T-160 that he sold to Dick Durant another MW SCCA star. I saw that when he was dropping a 427 in it in his driveway. "Model Car & Track" slot car magazine is a GREAT source of configuration, paint and markings for 1960s Indy, F-1, Can-Am and other series cars. I had 'em all at one time and I'm sure I'll order some soon (if not today). If I can have a dozen Lotus 29s and 38s, and another dozen Chaparrals, a few more magazines won't hurt. Thanx, John

You would need major bodywork mods to build this car from the Tamiya kit. Mike

Yea, the more I look into it, the more mods I see it will need. I figured some vents, engine stacks, some mirrors.... oh well.
I guess I'll be stuck doing the boring kit scheme.

You can always do this Simonize Lola (assuming you can source decals). The only major rework is to shorten the oil cooler on the left side of the car.

I have saved the Tamiya 1/18th Lola t160 for years to do this version, I have some Cady Decals that were for Can Am I think and they are slightly oversize and I think will be close enough or the other thought was to have Michael , Indycals, resize a set of one of the Eagle sets to get the basic numbers and Olsonite scripts. I dont remember the real car having Olsonite Lola on each side of the nose but just Olsonite, I think who ever restored it did that. But a good choice for the Tamiya kit anyways. Chris

Fellas. I am going to chime in here with something I have been thinking about posting in the for sale section. I know these Tamiya kits are available on evil bay at silly prices. But I have found a source in Japan that may be of use to one or two of you. Mandarake. order.mandarake.co.jp/order/detailPage/item?itemCode=1162038201&ref=list&keyword=Tamiya%20lola&lang=enThese guys have a number of stores over there in Japan. Used or second hand kits abound. Prices are more than reasonable. Just watch the postage as SAL is currently off the menu and they do not combine parcels from different stores. But who knows what you will find. I know some have talked about the LS 1964 (1965) Ford GT40..... I know some have looked for 1/28 Otaki Can Am kits..... Heller Brabham BT33 and Ferrari 512s kits. 1/12th Tamiya kits at attractive prices. All sorts. If it was made in Japan you will likely find it. Cars. Planes. Space. Sci fi. You name it. I have been buying from them for about 18 months and have always been more than happy with their service.

Thanks for the Mandarake link. I ended up buying the T160 kit from there. From the time you posted this to the time it arrived was 6 days - that included a day delay for them to send me an invoice (they had to check it wasn't sold out of the store-front first). Shipping (DHL) was twice the cost of the kit, but total was still considerably less than I could get it on eBay for. The only thing I didn't like about the Mandrake website is that you can't filter out out-of stock items, so you get a lot of 'false hopes' when you see something only to realize they don't have it.

Michael, Does that mean we will see an actual Lola T160 Olsonite set of decals from Indycals? I am sure there are few guys who would love to do that version also? Chris

Indydog, I know you are also on Motorsport Modeling link race-car-models.proboards.com/ There are several guys on there are doing custom sheets ( nice stuff too ) I think Bernard is one and they should be able to do most any other livery. Chris

I am using Google Chrome with their translation feature. When you search, scroll down the left side menu. The fifth box down should be "sold out". Click "Do not show" and that should filter out the sold items from the search. HTH Jordan

With regards to the Mandarake web site.
I am glad a forum member or two found it useful.
I understand about the false hopes when you see everything listed but that helped me discover the Otaki and Mitsuwa branded material of 60s Can Am and 70s sportcars and prototypes. I use it for reference and to go off and find kits where I can and have recently found a source here in England.
The postal situation is not pretty from Japan with SAL taken off the options by the store. And as I said, they do not combine postage on items from different stores.
That said. Sometimes the item is so cheap the postage matters not.
One last pointer for you all if you do not mind. Anyone big on early 00's Ferrari F1 cars at 1/20th should just type in 'studio 27' in the search....

Patto's Place in Australia has a couple decal sheets including one with the Simoniz Special marking (but only 3 of this) and the #10 gumballs for Parson's car. I haven't checked references but looks like it may not include all markings needed for that car, such as the 4th Simoniz for the wing and maybe some of the small contingency markings. www.pattosplace.com/decalsL.htmlScroll about 3/4ths towards the bottom and look for "Lla T160 - Sam Posey" and for "Lla T162 & 60's F1". I've ordered once from Patto's a couple years ago and had no problems getting my order but haven't tried any of the decals yet. But if Michael is considering doing other decals for that model, better to wait for his as you know they'd be complete and accurate. Cameron

Guys, just keep in mind the "TS" in the model designation. The Lola 160 was a production car, the Lola 160TS was Team Surtees' highly modified house version. I always thought it slightly odd that Tamiya did a basically one-off car. Check your references!
