Paul, Do the half shafts look right? For late 90s 1.15mm or 0.046” is correct. Not sure about the 80s though.

I really cannot wait to see this model completed. This is so awsome to see all the steps you are taking on this. I would never have the patience to do this. Great job.

I put the question out on the 1980’s Indy Cars Facebook page last year and I got an answer from Chuck Sprague. He said they were about 1.2” in diameter. The closest tube/rod is the 1.5mm. Your question did give me the excuse to Kevin a call as he worked on Indy cars in the mid 1980’s. I kept the conversation short but we had a nice talk. His main thought was that the speedway cars probably had smaller diameter half shafts than road course versions. If anyone has any additional information or photos I’m all ears. I would love to use 1mm aluminum tubing as it would be much easier to cut than this 1.5mm stainless steel rod. And, looking at this photo of Mario’s actual car at Indy, that half shaft does seem to be quite small in diameter. Trouble is that a 1mm tube measures less than 1 scale inch, so I don’t know of other options. Paul Erlendson

If you’re wondering at the lack of progress, the answer is quite simple and a little complicated. I have nowhere to build and the model is all packed up in storage. After my last post we started in with our spring yard work. As our perimeter flower beds were damaged extensively after new fence construction last year, we had a lot to do. We were also limited physically as we were in a car accident last November where our car was totaled and Suzanne was whipped around a lot. We were hit by a 17 year old with one day on her license. Suzanne has been slowly recovering with the help of a great spine doctor and wonderful physical therapist, but she just hasn’t been able to enjoy her gardening this year. So, we were sitting on our porch on July 4th and I looked at her and said “let’s sell”. She agreed, and I grabbed my iPad and sent a query to a real estate agency we think highly of. Last Sunday, after a huge amount of work (part of which was the complete boxing up and tearing down of my model room) and one month to the day of our fateful decision, we signed papers to sell our house (We had 5 offers in two days all over the asking price) and purchase a much smaller home where we can enjoy our later years. We hope to be in our new home by the middle of next month or sooner and I’ll have my new and improved building area up and running sometime this fall.

Wow Paul, sorry to hear about the car accident. But glad to hear that she is on the right track. I hope the move goes as smooth as it can and you guys get settled in quickly!! Looking forward to seeing what comes out of the new work area.
