I have each of these kits, but the wheels are the kiss of death. I know Herb Deeks used to make a wire wheel replacement set for these models but I haven't seen any for sale online. Does anyone have any suggestions? Let me know. Thanks.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Let me know. Thanks. I was able to buy some from Herb a few years ago when I built mine, but the problem was that the photo etch didn't account for the diameter reduction when the spokes were bent to the proper shape and as a result they were too small to fit the kit wheels, but I made them work somewhat. Those wheels Brian linked too look fantastic.

The Pinto wheels are VERY nice. But as Brian stated... a little pricey. Shipping from Portugal may be iffy at best, given the current situation. The Deeks wire wheels will work, but they do take a bit of effort. He occasionally sells them on Ebay. Here's a shot of the Deeks on my Alfa:

I just checked the South Eastern Finecast site, they made the wheels & tires that Bill J. and Chris Etzel included in many of their resin kits. They still list several types, the numbers do not match my packaging. I purchase several extra sets about 15 years ago. I remember the price was reasonable at the time. The only drawback is you have to lace them yourself, they do give you a little jig but I never could get their supplied wire straight enough. I used nylon fishing line instead and it seemed to work well, easier to stretch tight. Wheels and tire sets are not pictured but are listed on the price list, under the car kits. I think the type I have are now numbered SP03, for MG TC, you get 5 in the kit. HTH! Brian Site: www.sefinecast.co.uk/Contents.htm

I like the Finecast wheels & tires that Brian mentioned...Working with the jig & supplied wire can lead to the use of colorful language not appropriate around children but I really like the end result! Never thought about using fishing line but might try it next time I make up a set of their wheels

I was confronted with the same issue several months ago. Spent much time looking online without much luck. I went with the pinto wheels. Downside is the cost and delivery from Europe. Upside is they look fantastic and are really very sturdy made.

I’ve bought some four pound fishing line and going to try lacing up my own wheels for a couple of upcoming projects. I’ll show you how I did them if I get them to work.

It's been a few years (probably 10!) since I did any of those wheels with fishing line. I remember drilling a hole in the rim, passing the line thru to the outside (inner diameter) of the rim, knotting the line, then lacing all the "spokes", I dabbed a little glue on the knot and painted it to look like a valve stem, but I can't remember how I did the finishing end of the line!

I recently (little over a month ago) bought two sets of these 3D printed wire wheels from Model Builders Warehouse: www.modelbuilderswh.com/collections/wheels-tires/products/01-borrani-wire-wheels-1-24th-scaleI bought these wheels hoping they will work for the SMER (reissued now by Atlantic Models) Alfa and Talbot kits, as the listed diameter of these 1/24th scale sets are close to the kit wheel diameters. They look very good in the box, just hoping the spokes are not too fragile! Each wheel includes a 3-ear knockoff molded in place. They also have slightly smaller 1/25th scale versions of these wheels. Note they are currently showing as Out Of Stock, but Randy had just restocked right before I placed my order, so check the site regularly, or send him an email to ask when he expects to get more in. Also, the below linked article by Curt Raitz includes useful info on adding detail to the Alfa kit. Curt converted his from the kit Alfa 158 to the Alfa 159, but much of his info should still apply to the 158 in the kit. Of course, don't forget that Indycals's 3D printed engine and radiator grill update sets are still available through Shapeways for both the Alfa and Talbot kits! www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/81345-51-spanish-gp-winning-alfa-romeo-alfetta-159_juan-fangio/Hope these help with your builds. I've read that photo etch 1/32th WWI biplane wire wheel sets will work with these two kits. That's what I plan to try when I tackle them myself.

Bobby: Take a look at these: These came from Shapeways...they are put on the Maserati 4CLT from Merit... These are 1/24th mounted on the rubber tires from SEFinecast...they are the Borrani style I think from later styles but I am not sure they are period correct for the Smer kits...what do you think? tim

Hi Guys: Thanks for all the suggestions. I didn't know Herb Deeks was still in business. After reading the first suggestions I ordered the wheels from Fernando Pinto. I'm going to keep the Deeks info for future reference, though. T appreciate all the great feedback!

Yes, those are the wheels from Model Builders Warehouse I was referring to. See my post above for the link to the 1/24th scale versions. Tim's link is for the 1/25th scale versions. The only difference between the two is the dimensions. Cameron

Does anyone know of another source of tires that would work for these kits and various (MBW/Deeks/other?) replacement wheels? It sounds iffy whether Herb Deeks still has his tires available, and also not sure about getting the ones from SE Finecast with the international shipping issues during the pandemic. The Pinto wheels and tires do look fantastic, but the price rules them out for me.
Are the Replicas & Miniatures Jaguar tires the best option? Or are there any other tires available in the U.S. that are worth using?

Hi to all I ordered a set of the 1/24 Borrani wheels late Friday evening from MBW just to have something to try on the Alpha and the Talbot. I received them on Monday. Extremely good service just with USPS first class. These wheels are beautiful, very clean and best of all they will work on both cars. You might need to shim them slightly but nothing that will show. They should be fine as far as strength after all these things are static not slot cars.
I have 3 of Gary's kits that have wire wheels the 1940 Maserati ,the 1949 Blue Crown and the 1950 Kurtis. With a little shimming it looks like they can be used with all of them. Even though they are 15 inch I don't think it will be noticeable on the larger tires. They are good enough that I ordered 2 more sets. Best to all
