Henry Surtees, son of John Surtees, has died as a result of being struck in the head by a tire during an F2 race at Brands Hatch.

wow, what a tragedy! the video doesn't seem that bad but a big wheel and tire hitting just right...

I can't imagine an open wheel series without wheel tethers in this day and age. The cost is very minimal.

Formula 2 does use wheel tethers. They are held to the same safety specs as F1. See this article:
