That gets me revved up for sure. What a beautiful car. I bet AJ can't fit in it anymore.

Being rather new, and learning what is available, is there Lotus 34 kits out there? Thanks, Bill

Hi ya Bill!!!!!
The only way to build that beautiful car is to take a Lotus 29 and work with it. I have done a great deal of "looking" into it and that's the only way. Just do what George Bignotti did, take a Lotus 29 and put a Ford Four-Cam engine in it. Then work with the body, just like the Marshman car. Fred Cady still has decals for it too.
Best to you
Russ

Would using a Lotus 38 kit with a Lotus 29 kit shorten the work? Just spitballing ideas here - I need another modeling project like I need another hole in my head LOL but I like to help others ;D You think if they ever make a stamp of AJ there will be the young/skinny vs older/heavier debate? jk I drive by his race shop a few times each year... really an odd place for a race shop if you ask me (which no one does ) Jordan

Well..........really, doing this car would be almost the same as doing the 1964 Marshman Lotus and using a 29 would be the way to go. Much eaiser. I have always like this car and all of A.J.'s cars......This is a beautiful car. It was the one Dan Gurney drove in 1964 modified by "Big George Notti" as A.J. would call him in good times.
The paint job would be a nightmare, Pearl White and metallic Red and blue, just like the 64 winner. Cady's decals are great!
Best to you

Thanks fellas, and Thank You Russ for that info...I knew the Marshman Lotus 29 was the Gurney back up car and I knew the Parnelli Hurst Agajanian Lotus 34 was one of the Jim Clark cars but I did not know about the Foyt Lotus 34 history! Here is a scan of the Cady decal sheets. I have several more pics of the Foyt Lotus if there is interest! Apparently there are separate markings on the sheet to do Al Unser's team car...My Indy 500 Chronicle by Popely says it was a Lola ! Anybody know for sure?

I was doing research for a decal project in that very book last night and found a couple of mistakes (picture from the wrong year, misstatements) so I wouldn't bet the farm (or my model collection lol) based off of the information in there. I think the book is probably mostly correct on their informatino but definitely not entirely correct. Just some lack of attention to detail in there. Now having said that - the Indy 500 stat site says it was a Lola, too.... www.indy500.com/stats/drivers.php?drivername=Al+Unser Jordan

In 65 Foyt drove a heavily reworked lotus 34 and Unser drove a Lola as Foyt had one of each . Bob Clidinst has drawings of Foyts Lotus 34 from 65 , a must for someone building this car . Not only will the upper body and nose need work but the tub will need to be reworked aswell , the sides of the tub were expanded outwards as opposed to its previously straight lines . A large blister tank was added to the right side of the car for race day , there are very few good photos to be found of this modification . The tail cone was also modified as most of the sides and bottom were cut out and replaced with screen . Foyts cars in 66 were Lotus 38's even though they are commonly called Coyote's , this is well documented in Andrew Ferguson's book "Team Lotus , The Indpls. Years" The first real "Coyote" was the 67 car. Lance

Thanks for all the photos of that beautiful car!!
If Bob Clindinst has drawings of it, that's the way to go! I would stake my car on the info Bob has! His drawings are very accurate! Also, Bob has seen every laop turned by any car since 1964.
Also........Over the years I have discovered that SMTS 1/43 kits are very accurate! The decals leave a bit to be desired though. The kits are very good! After Lance's post, I'm sending off for Bob's drawings and I'm going to try to build this sucker!
Best to all

Apparently there are separate markings on the sheet to do Al Unser's team car...My Indy 500 Chronicle by Popely says it was a Lola ! Anybody know for sure? I dug into my copy of the Chronicle and if you look at the results there are two Lola's that year and Al's car has very unique detail only in common with one other car in '65... and it was a Lola. So yes, I really think he ran a Lola. Not an eye witness though as I was -12 years old then ;D Jordan

How does one get Bob's drawings?

Ziggy is correct , the rear wheels are not Lotus , Parnelli also ran these wheels . I can find no Halibrand's running these wheels in 65 but found them on several Gerhardt's from 65, the rear wheels also can be found on Bobby Grim's 1966 turbo Offy Watson and the winners pictures of A.J.'s 67 coyote taken the day after the race . Okay, I may have a few answers on this sucker!!!
I spoke with Bob Clidinst, who has forgotten more about Indy Cars than all of us put together will ever know and he gave me a few answers. The car ran the race and quilified on Lotus Wheels. The Wheels on the car fro photos were Edmunds Wheels. The man who did the body work on the Lotus 34 was none other than Luje Lesovsky who was hired by George Bignotti. I hope that answers the questions.
Best to you

Hi ya Bill!
I got Bob Clidinst drawings of the care last week and I have been pouring over them. It looks like an easy conversion from the old AMT Lotus 29 kit plus some body work and a Ford Four Cam Engine from the Olsonite Eagle kit. The tires are Goodyear's and I'm looking into what to use. This has always been one of my favorite Foyt rides...Thanks for the pictures!
Best to you

I want to really thank all you guys for the knowledge you have of the Indy cars. I have to remind myself that I can only have so many projects at one time! LOL!! I could build a bazillion Indy cars, but I am going to really have to build up my knowledge base on these subjects.
Thank you, guys! Bill Little

Russ! I am eager to see your work as it progresses! Were the '65 Goodyear and Firestone tires the same dimension back then? If yes, then it seems the tires from a '65 Lotus 38 IMC or Famous Fords kit would work well. Obviously with losing the Firestone and adding the Goodyear. A shame to bash one of those kits for just the tires however! I have a set I could loan a resin caster if there is interest...Thank you to Lance as well for the info on the wheels!
Respectfully, Bill Hasselle

A couple more scans of the Foyt Lotus 34 from 1965...The first zoomed in so as to show that at least the LR wheel was of the six point star pattern at the beginning of the race. Here Foyt is waving to the crowd on the pace lap... The second is a close up so as to better show detail on how the oil tank was attached to the tub... Respectfully, Bill Hasselle

Hi Russ! Sent you a PM... As to your question, possibly we could ask Parnelli what it looked like! He is getting a good view of it here... Just kidding...but maybe it's not a bad idea! Best to you, Bill
