I am going to try to do the KK3000. Near as I can tell it made its debut at Indy in 1950. Drivers that year were Cecil Green, Pat Flaherty, Jack McGrath, and Fred Agabashian. In 1951 drivers were McGrath, Carl Forberg, Sam Hanks, Agabashian, Johnnie Parsons, and Green. 1952 drivers were Jim Rathmann, Hanks, George Conner, Jim Bryan, and McGrath. 1953 had Jimmy Daywalt, Spider Webb, Flaherty, and Paul Russo driving. In 1954 Larry Crockett drove one and in 1955 Chuck Weyant drove one. A regular who's who of drivers. Some of the 3000s had head rests, some did not. There were also several grills used over the years and each one seems to have individual bumps. I am going to try to use the Strombecker early sixties dirt car as the basis for this . The body will have to be widened , the nose redone, and the cockpit to nose area reshaped. The cockpit placement looks good. but needs reshaped. The wheelbase is a little long but that will be taken car of with a new nose. I started it today by removing the head rest. I am hoping that I can do this so it can be molded up and cast. If feasible, I would like to make a add-on head rest and several noses so that most of the cars that ran at Indy could be built. Some of the cars had louvres – have not figured that out yet. I am also going to try to do a 1964/65 Shrike using Juanjo’s methods. kip

Great project. I hope the casting idea works out. These would be a great addition to any collection!

Hi Gary,
To be honest, I have three projects going at once and, as a result, none of them are getting finished. On the other hand, I never get tired of any one of them and when I get frustrated with one I just switch to a different workbench. The basic body is just about done. I have some work to do on the nose. Its a bit wider than the body. When I get the nose right I will post some photos. The car had so many variations in the nose/grill area and of course the tail headrest. With so many big name drivers that drove this carI hope to make the basic body so that with some interchangeable parts, any of four or five versions can be made. Thanks for asking.

Here is where I am on this. The nose needs lots of work as it is wider than the rest of the body. Its slow going, partly my fault as I am working on a 1/350 scale Japanese aircraft carrier and the Shrike Indy car. kip

Thrilled to see this, Kip. You are an inspiration. I am so glad to see you doing this as you are a skilled and innovative modeler. By the way, I think you can add Jimmy Jackson to the list of drivers. He drove the #61 Cummins Diesel in 1950. It was painted green in honor of his high school (Arsenal Technical)in Indianapolis which caused a big stir at the time. I really appreciate all the pictures you shared. They sure do bring back memories for me. Jim

Before you began your modifications what was the source of that body? I've run across the identicle body and would like to know it's origin. It looks to be a larger scale too.

The basic body is and old 1/24 Strombecker dirt champ car body. It is available from Big Donkey. I have also used it to make several 1960s dirt champ cars: the Foyt Delrose Holt 14 and the Sheraton Tompson #1 and the #7. The tail is too tall and narrow for those cars and had to be dropped (in a similar fashion to the KK3000) and widened.
