I just finished my most recent build this afternoon, the Ferrari GTO 250 Roger Penske drove to victory in the 1962 Nassau Tourist Trophy race. Tim (AlwaysIndy) built this car a few years ago and did an nonpareil job on the car and providing its backstory. Here’s my build, along with a narrative to go with it, Tim set the standard and his build made me want to construct one of my own.
The Nassau Speedweeks featured prominently in the North American motorsports calendar each year, culminating with the Tourist Trophy race. These races attracted the top drivers from around the world, as well as some of the best sports car equipment of the era.
In 1962, Texas oil tycoon and racer, John Mecom bought a Ferrari GTO 250 and entered it in the Nassau Speedweeks. He picked a young Pennsylvanian named Roger Penske to drive for him. We know Penske today as one of the moguls of motorsports. His cars have won 17 Indianapolis 500s, in addition to wins across such varied disciplines as F1, sports cars, NASCAR, and Australian Super Cars. But in his youth, Penske proved one of the most talented drivers in America and in 1962 he used his talents to take this Ferrari to victory.
The GTO 250 is one of the most beautiful cars of all time, Ferrari made precious few of the machines, and as a result, these cars sell for tens of millions of dollars. It proved not only beautiful, but fast, winning many races the world over.
I built this essentially box stock from the Fujimi kit. The car went together with no difficulty, save operator error when applying my first coat of paint. After stripping and painting again, everything went smooth from there. The kit is well-engineered and it looks brilliant once completed. The car is painted Tamiya Italian Red and I used Historic Racing Miniatures decals to complete the build.
I also took photos of it with an Italeri/Testors 250 of the second place car driven by Lorenzo Bandini. Both are good kits, but I have to give the edge to Fujimi in terms of overall product.
Thank you for looking!
