I have decided that it is time to get some of these GT 40 cars built. I have had the kits for ages, happily missed out on the Ford v. Ferrari price increases. Still have not seen the movie, my motivation is that since 1964 I have liked the GT40.
The blue #2 car that is decaled, started as a Revell/Fujimi kit which came with a molded on "Gurney bubble" on the top of the driver's door. This car represents the car Dan drove at Sebring in 1966 and should have a round bubble. I did not know that when I painted and decaled the car, otherwise I would have made an attempt to correct that bit. The paint is Ford Guardsman Blue, shows dark with my pics but it is the regular Cobra paint color, Guardsman Blue, Scalefinishes acrylic enamel over Tamiya grey primer.
Next are 2 of the 1966 LeMans car, #1 and #2, depends on how you interpret that finishing order. The cars were marked 1 and 2 and both were Shelby-American entries. The black car has the "Gurney bubble" on the 1:1 and the light blue car does not have the bubble. Both cars are using the Fujimi kits for the car being built. No mods really required. Paint on the black car is Tamiya TS-14 from the can. The blue car is Scalefinishes acrylic enamel, '57 Chevy Larkspur Blue. the 1:1 car was Ford Arcadian Blue. I had the Larkspur blue on hand and it is just about the same as the Ford color.
The red and darker blue cars are from the 1967 Daytona 24 hour race and represent the MKIIb cars which are different than the standard MKII chassis. There are a lot of changes internally on the MKIIb but most are not applicable to a model. The body requires some modifications and some filling. The rear deck is smooth, devoid of scoops on the top side and there is an oil filler cap hole near the top of the left side. This is due to different locations of the oil tank. The MKIIb had dual 4 barrel carbs, a bubble on the rear glass to allow clearance for the second carb and there are fender flares on the rear quarters. There is also some body mods at the rear spoiler blade, i presume to add rigidity when some components were lightened. Also for the Daytona track the fuel filler is moved to the left side of the car. For both of my 67 Daytona cars I used Calvin's excellent Hobbitime resin conversion parts. The parts to make the MKIIb cars only come inside of a handful of the Fujimi kits. I will say that out of 6 kits I own, only one had the MKIIb parts. So be advised when kit shopping, especially at today's prices!
