Some years ago Carousel 1 produced the 1961 winner in a 1/18th scale diecast. There was much backlash from the diecast IndyCar collectors community because Carousel 1 messed up big time on the correct color red for the car. In fact the color was more maroon than red. No one could quite understand how a mistake of this magnitude, especially representing a four time Indy 500 winners first win could get past pre-production inspection? It has always bugged me so I thought I would do get one, strip it and paint it correctly. I used Indycals decals for everything except the red stripes down the sides. The nose has to be painted but I wanted no mismatch color from the nose to the sides of the car. The process turned out more difficult that I imagined. First I photo copied the decals so I could cut the stripes out and use them as a template. I cut the red portions away, made masks and painted all the red. Then I took the black stripes from the decal sheet and applied them. It was a lot of work but I am really proud of how the car came out in the end.

This is what C1 should have produced, especially for their initial release. Stu mentioned the red being wrong but the white was also incorrect. Another magnificent job from one of the premier modelers in the business.

I used Tamiya pure white and Tamiya Italian red. No pearl.

I see, thank you. I didn't think it was pearl, but it's sometimes hard to tell from period photos.

I swear that I replied to this this morning.....
The car looks really good, Stu. I am sure it looks even better in the light of day. I am hopeful that you get to keep this one.
Super sweet job, sir!

And I just thought some had bad exhaust and Firestone markings. Stu is still schooling us. This board schools me all the time. Car is Gorgeous. i knew C 1 released 2 versions. One with a short exhaust and with the wrong Firestone decals. Didn't realize BOTH paints were wrong. Nice car signed for ANYONE. Don't get me wrong, it's a correct car done by a very talented and experienced modeler. To have THAT one signed in a collection. Nice peice.

I saw this car in person. The photos do not show how beautiful it really is.
