I got this few weeks ago.....Its a CraftMasters (1/48) 30-foot dropped sponson Unlimited Hydroplane resin kit. There is a selection of different boats you can make out of this kit, like the Miss Madison, Miss Supertest II, Miss Pay'N Save, and more....but I decided since I live in the Spokane, WA area I would pick the hometown boat from 1968 - The Miss Eagle Electric. BTW Eagle Electric is actually still a business here.... Dave Heerensperger of Spokane owned the Miss Eagle Electric, it was built in 1962 as $-Bill and had a lackluster career until Heerensperger bought her and popular Col. Warner Gardner drove the "Eagle" to 3 victories in 1968, but sadly was killed during the Detroit Gold Cup later that year and the boat was destroyed as well... In its raw form everything looks pretty good - you can see the other options for other boats I already started to super glue on the basics..... 1600 c.i. Rolls Royce Merlin - at that time they were pulling about 2,500hp. Here is a 1968 qualifying run from Seattle of Miss Eagle Electric. It should be a very easy fast fun build. Also, just kind of an interesting thing about Hydro racing is most of the popularity is here in Washington State - just like most Indycar fans are in Indiana well most Hydro fans by a large margin IMO live in Washington. Most Hydro Books, videos, and models that I've got over time usually comes from my own state.

Hey! That's pretty cool, Calvin. I remember Wide World of Sports showing the Hydro races on tele! Yes, I'm that old. I bet there is an aftermarket Merlin in 1/48 airplanes...oh, never mind.

I just saw the movie "Madison" about the Madison Ohio boat and the "Gold Cup" races there in the 60's its a pretty cool movie. It is a little sappy here and there but it shows the pressure and struggles of the team and also the first use of N.O.S., no not the energy drink... if you havent seen it I believe Netfiix has it..I had the 1/24 Budwiser kit but it loooks like the 43rd scale is really nice too.. i've got one of their kits to build the madison from that movie. chris is right about the movie, a little sappy but pretty well done. i like to turn up the sound during the race scenes as it takes me back to when we used to watch them at miami marine stadium. to me, there is nothing that compares with 5 or 6 of those big bad roll royce engines screaming down a straightway for a start. duane

I have talked to the guys from CraftMasters at the Seattle IPMS Spring Show for years now. I want a closed canopy turbine “picklefork”. And every time I hear the same lame answer about updating their website and bringing out the new boats in a few months. I’ve given up on them ever bringing them out. Sorry, I’m ranting here a bit because they do really nice work and I’m just very frustrated with them. Good luck Calvin. You’re going to end up with a beautiful model. Paul Erlendson

I know they did come out with the 70's pickleforks.....but I have no idea if they have done any 80-90's closed canopy.....which boat were you looking at building just out of curiosity?

Hi Cal, its neat you started on this model. It's one of my long, very long term projects. I'm leaning toward Miss Bardahl and will be swapping the Rolls engine on mine. The kit engine is nice, but I'm using this one made by Aries/CMK. It's a little bit more detailed, but the main thing is it's a little bigger and seems to 'fill' up the engine area more so. In the first photo I've added the drive unit from the kit engine to the new one and have to modify the blower duct to intakes a bit. They also make a very nice Allison engine that can be used in boats with that engine. Again it is a bit better than the kit one (includes some P/E). It is surprising Craftworks havn't updated their site in years. They have available also Slo-Mo-Shun IV and a hydro boat trailer. I've heard they've released a 'pickel fork' style boat but I havn't confirmed this yet. Email them and thet'll let you what's available Sandy The Aries eng is on the left, The Aries eng in the boat, the valve covers are a bit different, but I'm still researching this as theres a bunch of Rolls variants. I started with this resin engine (a Merlin Mk 22) as it was in my parts bin already. I might trim off the C/W covers and transplant them to the Aries/CMK one. My info on these boats is very limited. Was the Rolls Griffin engine ever used? I guess variants of engines were used as availability dictated.

Wow Sandy! Thats cool! Thanks for sharing that about the Aries/CMK engine. Which year of Miss Bardahl do you plain to do?
Thanks for the info....
I know Bernie Little started to use the Rolls Griffon in his 1979-84 Miss Budweiser's The Griffon was about 600 ci larger than the Merlin and had an estimated 1,000 extra horsepower (4,000hp total!)

Hi, I got alittle ahead of myself as its been awhile since I dug this kit out. Your kit and this one are the 'dropped sponson' version for the Eagle Elec, Madison, Pay'n Save, Seattle Too, Supertest, etc. boats. Miss Bardahl is a seperate kit in a 30' Round Bow smooth upper hull version for the Bardahl, Maverick, Coral Reef, Tempest, etc. boats WITH an Allison. It seems one page of the R/Bow kit profiles ended up in with the Dropped Sponson kit when I started messing with them today. That having been said I recall my original plan was to do the Miss Pay'n Save boat from first kit. Later I would do Miss Bardahl from its own kit which includes an Allison engine. I have seen photos of Miss Bardahl, and it appears to be the same boat, with a RR engine. I also have the 30' Pointed Bow kit to build Hawaii Kai III, Gale IV & V, Miss Detroit, etc. From what you said above I'd guess the Griffons were not used in the sixty's era boats. Theres some books out there, but I havn't seen one that breaks things down clearly like with a big, fat Chart as for what boat, what engine, what year yet. I have several books that are on loan to me by someone, known, loved and admired by all here on the Board who shall remain annoymous until he says its OK, that some have good info. I'll go through them again tonight with a eye toward sorting out the versions. Cal, I understand there is a Hydro Boat museum out there in Washinton. Have you been there? Sandy

Ok I understand...I've always liked the 1965 Miss Bardahl with the mr. detective guy on the rear fin. I dont know if Craft masters has that version or not? No I've never been to the thunderboat museum in Kent,WA (Seattle) I'd love to go... thunderboats.ning.com/I did go to the 2007 Tri-Cities cup and very much enjoyed it.

BTW, thats a beautiful boat you're planning on. Sandy

What CraftMaster has done in the “pickle fork” style of boat is a rear engine internal combustion open cockpit boat. They have not done a closed cockpit turbine boat. That’s what a friend of mine and I have been campaigning about when we see the guys from CraftMaster every year at the Spring Show. Calvin, I would say that I would be most interested in Miss Atlas Van Lines but I would also love to build the Boeing boat that I saw a couple of years ago at the museum. Paul Erlendson Attachments:

My dad took me to see a Gold Cup race in Detroit when I was about 9. I still remember the roar and the roostertails. My friend Gordy still races this plywood hydro (big block chevy power) in the Classic races. He has it up for sale because he had a triple bypass a couple of years ago but he raced it this year. That's my girlfriend trying to get the Indians game on the radio.

but I would also love to build the Boeing boat that I saw a couple of years ago at the museum. I also have a 1/43rd (yes 43 not 48) 2012 Oh Boy Oberto that I got from the thunderboat museum site. The decals has a lot to be desired (peal and stick ) but other than that its resin body is shaped good IMO I didn't take pics but it does have a clear cockpit in the kit with other parts....

They also have these in 1/48th scale: These 1/48 scale resin cast model turbine unlimiteds are new for this holiday season. Replicating the modern turbine pickle fork hydroplane, these high quality are sure to be popular. Available kits are: Valken, Oh Boy Oberto (U-1 or U-6), Spirit of Qatar, Elam. Red Dot (Both cowlings), Formulaboats.com (U-1, U-5, U-7) and Peters and May (2011, 2012).

Found a little unlimited hydroplane racing on CBS Sports Network this morning. They broadcast the Lake Washington race. Next Sunday morning they will be broadcasting the final (I think) races of the 2013 season. Coeur d’Alene and San Diego. I believe channel 221 of Direct TV.

Looking back on this thread kinda cracks me up and annoys me at the same time....I've learned a lot in 3 years....and know some things and also make some corrections. BTW Eagle Electric is actually still a business here.... Not the same place. Also, just kind of an interesting thing about Hydro racing is most of the popularity is here in Washington State - just like most Indycar fans are in Indiana well most Hydro fans by a large margin IMO live in Washington. From what you said above I'd guess the Griffons were not used in the sixty's era boats. The CA-3 Miss Supertest III and 1968 Harrah's Club used Rolls-Royce Griffon's and if you really like big engines how about the...... 1958 Adios that had a 3,420 ci, 4,000hp, W-24 Allison. or the 1961 Gale VII - Packard V-16 which I know nothing about this V-16? Cal, I understand there is a Hydro Boat museum out there in Washinton. Have you been there? I think I have? LOL! love to build the Boeing boat that I saw a couple of years ago at the museum. Originally this was the 1997 Ellstrom Manufacturing that crashed and got stuck on top of the Miss Budweiser and almost went into the spectators on the log boom and then turned into a science experiment about 10 years ago with Boeing. and I took a few detail shots last week.... Paul if you get halfway on your 1982 Ferrari I will build you a generic 90's hydro for you! (if there is such a thing as generic 90's hydro? - aka: something that can be close to this) Just need a good source for a 1/48 Lycoming T-55..... They also have these in 1/48th scale: No thats what I got and they are actually 1/43rd. It says it on the box I got in and plus its smaller than my 1/48 30' boat. I don't know what I was thinking? It's 1/48! I was just being stupid.....
