This was modified from a $20 Heller Lotus Mk 49B glue bomb (expensive as glue bombs go but...)! I've not posted about this because sometimes I bite off more than I can chew!! Anyway, it is coming along well and I just await some Cady decals from EvilBay! Really a simple conversion I stepped into the poo-doos with the brittle suspension parts like the Heller McLaren M10B rear suspension! UGH! I'll post the progress report tomorrow night as I'm pooped out! Patrick

Here's the nose plugs... after minor body werk and paint... the early 49 had a ZF transaxel and not the Hewland, so a Heller Porsche 908 offered a ZF look alike... My thanks for the idea to paint the velocity stack covers with a wash of gold goes to Chris! They do look like real brass covers! Putting the MFH tires on the Heller cars requires a bit of a challenge as the ride height changes...the damper (this is an English F1!) length will change so they must be adapted to fit. More to come... Patrick

Here's the car this morning waiting its turn... Oh, as for the time...we lazy teachers do nothing during the Summer! (we're trying to recover from a year with peoples' crazy, ill mannered, uneducated children while increasing our knowledge taking summer workshops! Oops, sorry for editorial...must be a sore spot! LOL!!!!!!!) Patrick

Patrick, there's a Revell Lotus that has a gearbox that is perfect, looks very close to the ZF gearbox, i have one and i'm doing almost the same that you are doing with the Heller Lotus 49, but the mine will be Gold Leaf, without that big spoilers. Very nice project , like always. Cheers. Alex

Thanks guys! I've wanted to do this conversion for many years, but the nose work always held me back...now it wasn't so bad! The rear trailing links and dampers went on well. Hope I "win" the decals. Cady decals, while not as excellent as Michael's, are a good start.

This started to be the prototype Zandvoort car, but the one think I didn't want to deal with was the windscreen. It is different as on the "production" car because it is a BRG painted affair and the yellow tinted one(as in the kit) shows up two races later at Brands. The early one is made differently than the later. This would be a major consideration in any prototype conversion model.

Nice work. I am following this as it is on my "to do list". I didn't know about the different gear boxes on the 49 and 49B before you wrote it so I'm glad I found your build. This gave me problems since I don't have a Porsche gearbox to use but I think I found a solution. Testor's Lotus 38. I have a spare engine and I might take the gearbox from it. Are you using the Heller tires? When I look at pictures of the 49 I sometimes feel that the Heller wheels are to wide but when looking at other pictures they look OK. Perhaps the Lotus 38 tires could be used. They are close to the Heller wheels in diameter but not as wide. I have new resin tires for the 38 so the Testor tires are spares.

Patrick,
Like all of your builds, this model looks absolutely great. Your display shelves must be amazing to see.

On Bjorn's query concerning the tires...they are my last set of MFH 70's sports car tire set. I despise the Heller tires, but seem to be the next best thing as the 38 tires are way too narrow. Now, if you had two resin sets then you could sand then down and mate them together for the correct width.
Thanks all for the kind comments.
Patrick
Oh, the decal set went for too much money. Hmmmm. Now for Plan X-Ray.

Bjorn, Check with Kevin at www.stradasports.com, he is showing those tire in the MFH section and has a special relationship with Model Factory Hiro, he has been able to get some items that were very limited or discontinued direct for me. Those are really great tires... Chris
