Just joined the forum and I'm considering which kit from the ancient stash I should attempt. I've got a Kogure 1/12 Lotus 33 that I've been lugging around for ages and, although it looks pretty toylike, it seems like it could be built up into a pretty impressive replica with a lot of work. Has anyone ever seen one built up and does anyone know of any good 3 views of the 33? I've got plenty of photos, but no plans.
Don

Hi Don, I have never seen the Kogure Lotus 33 but years ago I built the 1/12th Bandai Lotus 33. The kit was a nightmare and the wheels were freaky over sized. I ended up contacting ABC in Italy and bought a set of tires and wheels for their Ferrari 312 kit. I cut the Lotus wheel inserts out and installed them in the ABC wheels. While not perfect, it really helped the stance of the Bandai. Stu

BTW, luverly 33, Stu. Great job on a dog of a kit! I believe the Kogure and Bandai are the same molds. Mine was the UPC version.

Stu, Great job on the Lotus, it does look to be the same kit. When I bought it, there was a Ferrari 158 in the same series (wish I'd picked that up too). My impression is that the body is pretty close, but the rest is the usual simplified motorized car kit of the period. Thanks for the drawings frontyford. I've got several books on the 24/25/33 series, but none of them have useable 3 views. I wish the automotive authors would take a hint from aviation books and consider 3 views mandatory in a technical book. I'm thinking that I will concentrate on the engine/transmission for now and try and produce as accurate a powertrain as possible. I've played around a bit with Blender 3D to create aircraft and engines and am considering trying to make 3D files of some parts like the cam covers and engine auxiliaries so that they could be produced by a 3D printer. Has anyone had any luck with that? Here's an example of a 3D file of an 80hp Le Rhone rotary done in Blender (a really nice free program that gives impressive results). A nice FWMV should be possible using parts created like that. Don

Your 33 is the best I've ever seen. Well done!

I scaled the Lotus 33 drawings that frontyford posted up to 1/24th and 1/12th and printed them out. Out of curiosity, I wanted to see how an AMT Lotus 29 compared to the 33. It's a bit narrow, but close otherwise. The Kogure 33 looks slightly narrow at the front, but not bad overall. It looks like the wheelbase will be about right. The Kogure tires aren't too bad for diameter, but the tread and sidewall lettering are a joke. The engine block/final drive/gear box unit is simplified and boxy in order to hold an electric motor, but the dimensions seem about right and it should be an OK basis for building a detailed drivetrain. Brian, The seller is from Sylvania Ohio which is about 15 minutes from where I live.
Only people that have never built this kit before will pay that much money for it because they don't know what they are getting into. Just because it's old doesn't mean it's good! Scary!

Bandai kits are a suggestion at best of what they purport to represent. If you don't have time to do it right, why bother?

Stu, I have one just like the auction, I think I paid $30 for it (a few years ago), still maybe a little too much!

I bought the Kogure 33 in 1967 in a shop in Bedford, UK for a couple of pounds. It spent the next few years traveling around in duffel bags and footlockers before getting attic'd in various locations. There's not much left of the box so it wouldn't be a collector's piece, so I figure why not build it?

I'm trying to put the finshing touches on the body of a Finecast Lotus 33. Does anyone have left over yellow stripes from the Tamiya Lotus 25 kit? The Finecast stripes are terribly orange not yellow. Can one get the decals from Tamiya? Any other suggestions? Willing to pay. Needs to go the length of the body. After I take care of that I can add all the outer parts. Thanks.

You can get the kit decals directly from Tamiya. You could also consider getting just a whole sheet of yellow decal and just cut the stripes out yourself. Hope this helps. How do you like the Finecast kit? I was considering one and am looking for input as to the quality and building ease of their kits. Chuck

Thanks Chris but it doesn't like that URL. I tried. Somehow Calvin found a different URL and it works.

Chuck, it's only 1 of 2 I believe in 1/24 scale. If your somewhat of a scratch builder it's possible to make a good build. Don't like the soft suspension arms. I turned the wheels from aluminum. You got to build like it an airplane. From the cockpit (inside out). I soldered the two halves together and scribed in the panel lines like that Japanese small cars modeler. You could separate the top cowling from the bottom half of body like Patrick has done with his Finecast Lotus 25. A little more extra work and how are you going to keep the top on. I like mine but it's been a lot of work. I can't wait till it's done.

Almost done with the SEF Lotus 33. Looking for a 3d 1/24 two eared radiator cap which is very prominent. Also looking for a nose team Lotus logo decal with a white background underneath the green triangle. Most decals have a yellow background under and around the green triangle. Appreciate any help or suggestions. Thanks!

Bandai Lotus33 . Help! Members may know - I had one like this about 40 yrs ago. My recollection was that it seemed like a Lotus 25 in various ways and with terrible incorrect tyres exhaust.gearbox , etc. . But this Bandai L33 box artwork looks familiar. So 1. Was Bandai's L33 vaguely as I describe it and a bit like a composite L24/33? Or did Bandai or some other co issue a dodgy 1/12 Lotus 24/25/33 around late 60s+ ? 2. The detail was so bad, as part of a convalescence I built it into an accurate L33 apart from the tyres including a fulldiameter lowlevelexhaust, metal gauze carbs shield, gearbox ribbing etc. This now quite nice model went missing in Putney London as part of a theft late 1970s. If anyone seen it or comes across it, pl let me know. Thanks. Bill
