Ahhh. just another example of keeping a clear head and showing patience through adversity. So now I have to get Dupli-Color Bright White too.
Is that paint good as a replacement for Tamiya Pure White? JORDAN!!!!!

Hi Sheriff Bart, Yep, the Tamiya is a Clear Pearl top coat. I still like the HOK Shimmrins Snow White pearl, but it is no longer at my Wally World. So, I am going to have to break out the airbrush, mix some pearl power in Dupli. Paint Shop Clear, and spray away over the Bright White! We have officially passed the *40 days and 40 nights* of rain, I do believe (and I don't have the Ark finished.....). My airbrush is only spitting water, and that's WITH a water trap! ;D Gotta LOVE LACQUER!!!!!!!!Mongo

Is that paint good as a replacement for Tamiya Pure White? JORDAN!!!!! Gregg, Dupi-Color Bright White Lacquer is the best for painting any white race car I have ever used... PERIOD! Dries fast as all get out. I can answer your question about black enamel drying so slowly too. Black is a very heavy pigment for any paint. Thus, the heavier it is, the slower it dries. I have to agree with Mongo on this one. Dupi-Color Black is the best way to go...but remember, you'll have to primer any plastic with a good primer first before you use any lacquer paint in it. Another mistake of mine to discover the proper way around things. Best to you! Russ

Actually the Tamiya Pearl white is perfect when applied over white primer. But that goes for all Tamiya paints - to get the most out of the color, put it over white primer, because all but a very few Tamiya paints are translucent.

I have airbrushed the *new* Duplicolor Paint Shop Lacquers (in the quart cans, prethinned) over EVERYTHING and it has not attacked anything. Bare plastic, Testors small bottle enamels, Tamiya acrylic bottle, and all other spray paints I have. I did tests to see what it would *do* since it is a *new, VOC compliant lacquer*. The best thing is that it works just like the old lacquers as far as fast drying and rubbing out, but the bad news is that it is in limited colors so far. It sounds expensive at about $20 a quart, but it will paint a gazillion models from one quart. ;D Mongo

Ready for pant & Decal placementNow that Old Calhoun is drying from being sprayed with a coat or two of Tamiya Pearl White paint, now is the time to check painting scallops and decal placement. Michael Portaro at Indycals has taken a great deal of the hard work out of this task for you with his accurate and wonderful sheet. The numbers are perfect and he even has all the little sponsor decals lined up for you too....but it's okay to check out photos of the real Old Calhoun to make sure. This photo was taken right after the race in Victory Lane. This a close up taken the day after the race....The full size photo has Parnelli shaking hands with Jimmy Clark behind Old Calhoun. These two taken during the race with Old Calhoun throwing it's oily fit late in the race. These show you how he order of small sponsor decals should be arranged on the side and where the numbers and main sponsor decals should be place. For those of you that don't have Indycals sheet for this..... GET ONE!!!!but for those that don't. here is an accurate running order from back to nose of sponsor decals. US Auto Club, Marquette. Grant Pistons, Mobil, Primer, Sunnen, Airheart, Willard Battery, Prefect Circle, Champion Spark Plugs, Monroe Shocks, Bowes Seal Fast, and last, Raybestos. Now if you have the time and patients to line up all those decals and you have hem, be my guest and do it yourself. Michael at Indycals has done the difficult work for you and has them on his sheet....in order. Also, you can see how the scallop patten is run down by the nose and the fun we'll have masking it off. Well, if it was easy, anyone could do it...right? Best to you! Russ

WALLSMACKER!!!!!!!!!!
Well....I hit the wall too! As you know, I have been woking on Old Calhoun and I was masking off the pearl white paint to paint the blue nose; all I had to do was move the tape a little...now mind you that I was using Tamiya's low tact masking tape..and it pulled the pearl white paint off of the body. (ARGGGGHHH!!!!) Back to square one! I let the Tamiya Paint dry for a day and a half......next I dry sand the body and start the painting all over again...and now here comes the rain to "Sunny" Southern Californa for the next three days...weee...
Like I said, if it were easy, everyone would be doing it!

Lesson Learned - Take Your Time
Well, one of the main reasons this happened is....1) I was in kind of a hurry to get it done. I shouldn't have been. 2) I am looking forward to seeing it done with the new decals. 3) I'm looking forward to my next project a little too much.
The way my mind works is....While working on one, I start to think about another one. My thing is...I work on one project at a time. This way, I don't get projects confused with another one. I think I have solved my decal problem for my next project.
Also, there was something done on this model I wasn't real happy with, so when I got the excuse to sand the body smooth, I decided to fix what I didn't like. The main air scoop in the nose got a little too big during sanding before painting. Now, I have gone back and fix the problem. Onward and upward!!
Best to you!

If a person only has one model to work on at a time....100% of that attention goes to just that one, which = Better Quality. Thats what I want to do..... I have 7 models to go before I run out! Then I will just keep it down to.....one.....model...at...a Time

I am pretty sure that I suffer from Adult ADHD, so if I was only doing a dozen or so at a time it would drive me nuts! I lost count of the ones I am working on, I just get to working and when something has to dry, I grab the other one, and play musical chairs until they get done! It is important to keep the parts together in one place for each one, though. ;D Right now I have a table set up in the living room so that I can be with my wife in the evenings.......... haven't been working at my basement work table for a few months!

My bad, Michael, I have only seen the Pearl Clear, I wasn't aware of the Pearl White from Tamiya. That's the problem of not having a Hobby Shop with in an hour's drive! ;D Mongo

I've only seen the pearl white (TS45) but I do see that there is a clear pearl (TS65).
Russ, I wonder if the paint problem you had was due to using two different makes of paint?

BACK IN THE SADDLE AGAIN!!!After the3 deasaster of the Tamyia pint.....I fixed a few things with the body I wasn't happy with. As you can see, I sanded the body down, improved the nose scoop opening, and it's now back in primer. Best to you! Russ

Body Painted - FINALLY!!!After the mess Tamiya Paint made, I decided to go back to what I know. First I went back and primered the body with Dupi-Color Scratch filling primer, then went to primering with "KILLZ" flat white primer, then covered the body with Model Doctor "Ultra Flake" Pearl Powder using Future Floor way as the gloss coat. It took some time because of the water the compressor want to add to the mix, but I', happy this phase is done!.... FINALLY!!Now to let it sit for few days until I mask the body off to paint it. Best to you all, and thanks for your support through this! Russ

Hi Russ So you use KILZ as a white primer? Is that the alky or water base? Then you mix the pearl powder in the Future. Then you will paint the blue Duplicolor lacquer, and topcoat everything with more Future? This is a new method to me, I thought that Future was only good as a top coat. Please give me a step by step. Take Care Craig

Man, this one is really giving you fits in the paint department! But, it will turn out awesome. ;D
Can't say I have ever encountered that many problems! I am going with the HOK Shimmrins Snow White Pearl in the spray can. Then HOK Shimmrins True Blue Pearl for the nose, correct? Or was it just a Candy Blue?

Craig,
"KILLZ" is a flat white primer form the neither regions I used to use when house painting many years ago to stop mildew in sheet rock while restoring bathrooms. It goes on and is all powerful! First, I like to use Dupi-Color Scratch filling primer, which is gray, then "KILLZ" which is bright white, then I use Future Floor Wax as a carrier for Model Doctor "Ultra Flake" powder to spray through and onto the body. This way....HOPEFULLY....when I go to mask off the body o paint the Dupi-Color metallic nose, the tape won't pull off like the Tamiya paint did. Time will tell......
Best to you!

Body Dried - Masking to Paint other ColorsMasking the body to paint the blue is a paint in the rump! Old Calhoun is a beautiful race car, but not an easy one to paint....heck, let alone mask off to be painted. I waited a few days until the last pearl coat dried, properly. The again, using Tamyia light tack masking tape I started to do the scallop pattern around the nose and work back to the tail of the car. I then covered the rest of the car with 3M Low tack Plastic Tape, I discovered this stuff years ago building WWII Aircraft models...works great on windscreens. Once I was satisfied with the pattern on one side, I did the same thing to the other side. Word of warning.....The big scoop in the nose is a nasty process. Take your time!!!! Wish me luck as I go to paint the beast! Best to you! Russ

Mongo,
The project is stalled in the pits for a while. It's been sanded back to bare plastic once again until I can figure out the best way to paint pearl white on plastic once again. I guess I forgot how to in my old age.
Best to you!

Okay....body sanded and ready for re-paint two!!!
I'm normally the laziest modler around....but the decals are so good for this one the paint job must be first calss as well. So I wasn't at all happy with the way the pearl white came out and the dupi-color blue ran on the sucker....so I sanded it down to bare plastic once again.....and wish me luck on try number three.
Next I'll show you all how to vac form a new wind screen
Best to you!
