I think it's pretty cool that Ken Miles is a major figure in this film - it'll be interesting to see how they handle the 66 finish. Still a lot of confusion 53 years later. The finish seemed pretty cut and dried - Miles backed off and let McLaren win.. but why? There is a claim that McLaren won because he started further back but from what I understand that would only come into play if the finish was a dead heat. Miles seemed to know this and was upset when he was told that Henry Ford II wanted a dead heat finish, but the fact is McLaren crossed the line first and the only way that happens is if Miles let him.

Wikipedia mentions that McLaren admitted he accelerated at the finish but there is no citation to back it up. If so, my respect for Bruce takes a big hit, but I'll wait until more concrete confirmation.

From the book "Go Like Hell":
"Who's supposed to win?" Amon asked. "I don't know," McLaren answered, cryptically. "But I'm not going to lose."

Just pulled up my copy of "Go Like Hell" by A.J. Baime. A great read for anyone interested in this topic. About an hour before the race was to end both cars came into the pits for fuel and final driver change. Miles was told to slow down to let McLaren catch up as he was close to a lap down and the arranged tie. He was not happy, but did as he was told. The above quoted conversation between McLaren and Amon took place during their last pit stop. Even when Miles got out of his car he thought that he too had won in a tie. Paul Erlendson

Never knew McLaren/Amon swapped from Firestone to Goodyear mid race...the Miles comment “I think we got f*c#ed.”... Tim

Oh Boy Oh Boy Oh Boy.
Picked up the graphic novel 24 Heures Du Mans 1964 - 1967 Le duel Ferrari-Ford published by Glenat. Issin French but really well done. They might have done it in English by now. Kinda thing you would want made into a film.
Now this....
All those slot cars from that era look very appealing now.......

Interesting sports car history and will make a great movie. Miles should have won, he was winning until told to let the others catch up. A shame, Ken Miles had done all the hard work making the Ford into a race car, Before Shelby, with Miles as the chief test driver, took over the Ford GT program, they had never finished a race. Miles won the 24 at Daytona 8 weeks after Shelby and crew took the program over. Quite an accomplishment. For me, it will be hard to get to the theater for this, I despise Christian Bale and having him play one of my racing heroes is like having Marylyn Manson playing Elvis. I am going to have to suck it up and live with Bale I reckon

Ken had a sharply bent nose, the guy in the photo - while bearing a resemblance to Miles - does not appear to have bent nose.

Ken had a sharply bent nose, the guy in the photo - while bearing a resemblance to Miles - does not appear to have bent nose. A friend said they should have gotten Adrien Brody (sic?) and I have to agree. The trailer had flying cars and looked a bit like that god-awful CART movie with Stallone - I think I have deliberately forgotten it's name. Hopefully that stuff is kept to a minimum. As a poster on Facebook said, it's made to appeal to a broad audience, not us few thousands of hard core fans. I was a pre-teen when Ford began their quest at Le Mans, then Indy, F1, and Nascar. We had a '60 Fairlane then a '64 Falcon with the 260 V8 - the exact same engine behind Jimmy Clark! Kinda. I've been a hard core Ford fan ever since, even when there were times it wasn't easy. That said, I'll be at the theater on day one! MJ

That said, I'm impressed how well they got Bale to capture the feel of Miles appearance.

Anyone else see Bale in "American Hustle"? He seems to be a chameleon of sorts! I agree with Michael, the guy in Yates' article does look a little like Miles, maybe a brother? That might explain the knowledge, altho this is pure conjecture on my part as I know very little of Ken Miles' history or lineage. Looks like a must see, anyway.

Team orders are total bullocks. It is probably the one thing I dislike the most about F1. I don't think anyone wants to see a race where the team principals decide who gets to win. Is that really racing? If I want to see that I just watch WWE. (which I do but that's another story). Team orders tarnish any victory and in 1966 the best more than likely did not win that day but that can be left to conjecture.

The guy in this photo looks like retired ASA stock car driver, the Blue Knight, Tom Reffner. Who does live in Wisconsin.

Seems like Christian Bale could have played it with a bent nose if BillJ had spent a little time with him. I saw Bale in American Hustle and he's quite a chameleon.

Seems like Christian Bale could have played it with a bent nose if BillJ had spent a little time with him. I saw Bale in American Hustle and he's quite a chameleon. Well maybe when I was 30 years younger Good thought though! I will say, Bale can take on a role and starve himself or overfeed to make himself look the part.
My fear is it will be an entertaining movie but only toss in bits of truth and embellish it with visuals that are unnecessary. To me the history of the Shelby led GT40 program is very interesting, it stands alone as a racing achievement. Whatever amount of Hollywood they throw in, I hope they make the achievements of Shelby and Miles stand out, as it should.
Aside, I have to say, Ford has a history of going after some racing milestone and once achieved they sort of walk away. LeMans, Indy and now they are closing down the latest Ford GT program. Ferrari is consistent in their total commitment. Myself, I can't afford the key fob for a Ferrari

With hollywood's history for screwing up a good story i don't hold out much hope for them getting it right. at some point i'll see the movie and i do understand the need for making it appealing to the masses, but these reasons have always caused me to prefer reading the book instead. duane

I'll go to see it if only for the cars. I'm hoping they have recruited every GT40, 330P3, 250LM, 906 and other period race cars they could find for the track scenes.
