Thanks for the pics Patrick! I was looking for you, but perhaps you weren't dressed all in red with a Ferrari hat. :-)
I didn't see that last March in the garage, but saw it on the track and was wondering "what the...?"

Yes, I was wearing my hat, but had my BMW t-shirt on. It didn't go so well did it!

Hi Patrick, There is a good reference book by Wolfgang Klopfer "Formula A and 5000 in the United States" that includes some feature stories at the back and one references Gus Hutchinson and the HRE Chevy. It doesn't say anything in the story about it being banned, but Hutchinson is quoted as saying the driveshafts they were using were not up to the power output, and they broke fairly often.
He states they made a lot of changes to the March and got it to where is was faster than any of the others racing (73/74) but that the car still wasn't in the same league as the Lolas.

When I went to Jim Russell's driving school at Watkins Glen in 1973 we drove Lotus 61s. The roll bars weren't that tall and there was rear bodywork.
Looking back on it, the cars handled so well that we couldn't have gotten into trouble even if we had exceeded the school's rev limits.
