The other day I was pondering some of my planned builds and realized that I had 3 Long Beach Grand Prix F1 winners. Mario’s Lotus 78 and 1982 and 1983 McLarens. It hit me that with a little work I could have a fourth one. So begins this thread to my off and on work on these cars. First up is Mario’s 1987 winner, the Lola T8700/Chevy. I decided to bring back to life a long sitting effort that I had started many years ago. My speedway version of Mario’s car took a different direction and has bogged me down for years (Stu can attest to that!) but I created this version to be a simpler curb side representation of the car. I think it will be perfect for what I’m trying to do here. To make the road course version I’m using Michael’s Shapeways wings. The front will as he created. The rear will take some modifications to replicate the Long Beach version. First up was to mock things up and see how the rear wing looked. Without doing anything to the rear wing supports the wing itself sits too high. Michael believes that the max height was the same for both the speedway and high down force rear wings. I’m thinking that would mean that the top of the highest element on the rear wing and the top of the speedway wing would be the same. If any of you have any feedback on this subject it would be welcome. Paul Erlendson

Go Paul go! You sure you wanted this in the Misc. category? Thanks Stu! I plan on featuring 4 different cars on this thread so I thought this would be the best place for it. But wherever you and the other moderators think best is fine with me. Paul Erlendson

At first I thought the main planes might be at a similar height. But looks like the main plane of the r/c car is lower than the main plane of the s/w car. I think the upper elements would be above the s/w wing. Might check the YT video of the race for good profile shots. My connection here stinks so it was not loading the race for me to check. From the pictures I found, it looks like *to me*: - the end plates are much bigger and lower than what is on there (obviously) - the lower leading edge of the endplates are inside the rear tires - the rear wing needs to move forward - could be the photo angle but the rear wing looks to be drooping backwards a bit Jordan

Well, anal me (Stu can attest to that. Especially with this car.) will figure out this rear wing thing. It's really hard to get anything from Lola anymore since they are defunct. I did get some help through one of their archive caretakers last year but it took many months to get an answer so I found the next best thing to measuring a real car. Hopefully it will arrive in the next few days and I can figure out the exact dimensions and location. Paul Erlendson

Looking forward to watching this! I have Michael's wings and RA decals, but I was at the LBGP and like to do cars I have seen race. MJ

Ok, this should do the trick! I've been finishing up some "honey doo's" and should be back to this soon. Paul Erlendson
