The Dallas Morning News reported today that Jim McElreath has died at the age of 89. Jim was one of the few drivers still with us who drove both roadsters and rear-engine cars at Indy. Jim's son, James, was killed many years ago in a sprint car accident. Sad to lose one of the great unsung super-modified, sprint and Indy drivers.

Sad to lose another great from that bygone era. I was at Ontario when he won in a second Foyt car. It sounds like he was a good guy that faced more than his share of tragedy. His daughter was married to Tony Bettenhausen, Jr. and was with him when their plane crashed.
Those guys back then were more than insanely brave.
RIP Jim,
MJ
