I am waiting for the blue paint for Branson’s Mid-Continent Epperly to arrive and I have to do some modeling or I am likely to cause some sort of trouble. Idle hands and all that. I was corresponding with Walt a while back and he had the idea that maybe Lance Sellers 1963 Novi could be converted into a 1964/65 Novi. I pulled out the Clindinst drawings and the major differences appear to be the air intake beside the cockpit, the goofy fueling hardware on the tail, the nose, no engine area side panels, and assorted small scoops and doodads. The dimensions are basically the same. I (naturally) want to build the Herk’s 1965 #59 STP Tombstone Spl. Hurtubise was originally supposed to drive a Halibrand Shrike with a Ford engine at Indy in 1965. During practice the throttle stuck open and Hurtubise crashed. The car was destroyed. Herk agreed to drive the Novi. He qualified 23rd but had the 10th fastest time overall. The color was obviously changed from blue and yellow for qualifying to Herk’s beloved fluorescent red for the race. In the race, Herk finished last, completing only one lap due to a transmission problem. I am using the Lance Sellers 1963 Novi as the basis. I hate to cut it up for the removal of the side panels—but here goes. I started with the nose since that appears to be the biggest difference. The 1965 nose is minus the huge bump and air scoop that are on the 1963. I made a mold and cast it in resin. Needs a lot of clean up (opening up the nose and axle area). I also filled the hole for the fuel hardware on the tail. I am working on molds for the fuel hardware and the air intake. Hopefully that will be done today. I am not sure if I will make them from resin or vacuform them—probably vacuform the intake and pour the fueling hardware. GWS is going to do the decals, including the “turned” gold finish on the numbers. kip

What a fun project! With Herk and a Novi, it is going to be a popular thread, too.

I've been working on the body changes from the 1963 Novi to the 1965 Novi. I finished the nose that I started in my last post. I opened the front of the nose and filed out the sides just like the kit nose. Spacers were added to the back of the nose--I poured the resin a bit short in the mold. I added the big air vent beside the cockpit. Made it from plastic sheet. A screen will be added later. I also opened up the body panels beside the engine. I added the fueling mechanism bases to the top and side of the tail. I made a clay form for the top, made a mold, and cast it in resin. The side is just aluminum tubing. Will add the hardware later, hopefully from the spare parts box. Right side. Opened the engine side panel. There are a lot of air scoops and vents to be added, but since they are not painted the body color, I am going to add them after I paint the flo red. kip

Really nice. Super stripped down version. This car was featured on the cover of one of the very first racing books I bought myself. "The Oily Grail" and I must have been about 1974 or so.
An ambitious build for sure by an expert modeler. Keep 'em coming!

Does anyone know what the sponsor decal is on the tail of Herks Novi? I appreciate any help you can provide. kip

Ashland, which makes sense since it has Valvoline sponsorship. Jordan

Glad to help, Kip. The small print looks to be a little different but hopefully this helps you get close enough until the 60's experts check in this morning :-)

My Christmas present to the forum is (fanfare here) an update. The paint is on and the kit supplied frame parts and front axle are installed. The frame rails in the engine area where I cut out the body panel are brass tubing. The frame rails on the other side engine cutout will be done next after I install some header pipes to connect with the modified exhaust. (Neither of the kit supplied exhausts are correct for the 1965 car. The left side is much shorter and the right side is totally different.) I'll see if I can get a better photo of the facade of the Novi engine behind the frame rails. (Its actually a Jaguar engine modified to look like the lower side of the Novi. Merry Christmas kip

I test fitted the modified exhaust. This is the left side. The exhaust has been shortened considerably from the kit exhaust. The right side exhaust headers (scratch built in resin from a mold I made) and frame rails have been installed. The frame rails are soldered brass rod. The exhaust has been test fitted. Both ends of the kit exhaust had to be modified and the outer end has been drilled out. I managed to get enough light for the engine side facade to show up. kip

This is just remarkable. Your attention to detail and fabrication is outstanding. Love the Novi, ditto for Herk. Jim

Since last post I have put the suspension on. Nothing fancy, just the kit parts according to the instructions.. Highlighted the DZUS fasteners, put in some brake lines, and shined it up a bit. I’ll finish the cockpit and put the grill screen in the nose next. After that I’ll have to put this one in limbo until the decals arrive. I can’t do anything more to the body and still clearcoat it until after the decals are on. kip
