I finally feel like I'm starting to have the hang of this modeling thing, so, time to build one of my all time favorite designs that Raphael Matos took for it's first spin at Milwaukee in 2009. Have always loved this car! Not sure if I'll do the short oval/road wings or not yet, but I figured I'd knock out the difficult part first and get the body painted up.

Good old Italian Red just went on. Excited to see how this turns out. Not sure how I will handle the gold trim yet. The masking tape I used for the Giebler car is too thick for this one. Maybe I'll draw the lines as waterslide decals. The ALPS gold is perfect for this one.

Cool, so the pinstripes are gold and not white? That will really set it off.

Yep, they are gold. All the colors of the Marines. There is no gold stripe on the sidepod, however, because that is meant to emulate the red stripe on the pant of the Marine dress. Going to go with a grade of "doesn't suck" (I welcome your constructive criticism if you don't agree) on this. Room for improvement, but its taking shape! I'll look past paint flaws once it has a nice clear coat and the gold trim and some decals!

Seeing as Michael designed the livery, the only question is who will be printing the decals

Is the gold vinyl stripes, Mike? That is coming together nicely!

Yep, vinyl, freaking cut from 1/16 to 1/32 BY HAND. A fun challenge, and quite worth the reward now that I'm looking at this! I need to take a picture in the daylight with a good camera. The gold color looks terrible here, but perfect in person.

I stink at photos, but I just wait for a nice cloudy day and step outside and the diffused light makes me a professional. This car is looking amazing, great detail work!

Who printed the decals Michael ? I know you did the Artwork. WOW !!! If he wishes to print for you I'll let him reveal himself here personally. Not my place to say if he is not looking to do other work.

I started on some wings. I don't think they suck?! Printed these templates I drew up on mailing labels and stuck them on styrene and cut! Still a few more parts to make, but this experiment seems to have worked out!

I think I am in over my head This is pretty piss poor. I can't cut straight lines apparently! I must have skipped that day in kindergarten! I really do need a computer to draw a straight line! Maybe I need to look at 3D printing these parts and going from there. Fearing I should have just left this the way it was instead of starting over and thinking I could build the proper wings. We'll see how it looks after I do some sanding once I get the right Dremel tool, and the putty dries up, but I really think I've mucked this thing up pretty bad.

Rome was not built in a day. Just take your time and keep working at it. I have a 1991 Mears sitting and working on the shelf now for 5 years. You may be using to thick of styrene. Which can be sanded down but it also comes down to the right tools. Variable speed Dremel is a must. It is hard when you go from looking almost done to doing more detail and looks like not so done. It will get there and when it feels right it will be worth it.

Yes what Indy22 said! Don't rush don't get discouraged most importantly don't give up. It'll all come together and look great. Buy the EZ lock thing with metal and plastic cutting wheels will make life easier. Especially the thin cut wheel. Keep at it and this will look great!

Looks like this is what I'll have to settle on. Not great, but not a total fail, hopefully!

Is that with an air brush or straight from the can?

Sadly, airbrush. It's not the blue paint, it was the primer and being unable to properly sand the styrene for fear of damaging it. It's also a SUPER close up.
I wanted to get a coat of paint on it to see how it looked, and it did make me feel a bit better about it. Yes, the paint looks too thick, but that's the putty and filler primer, I believe.
Will still work on it to see what I can do to improve, but it'll do for a first time.

Maybe next time when you go to paint Wings like this you can Prep, Primer and sand your Parts before you Glue the Parts together. Where the Parts meet, remove the Primer, Filler and anything else down to Bare Plastic and then place Glue on the Bare Plastic for a Great Bond and then touch up if needed. Most of the time if you have to you can't see the touch up. I've done it many times and it works.
Good Luck Friend !

Your road course front wing looks good to me, and you've built one more than I have! I think one problem may be that the front wing on the real car never looked quite right...all added on, as the case may be! --Frank

4th, maybe even the 5th time repainting this but learned something new each time and put it all together on this try and I'm really happy with how the nose, especially, came out. It was lacking in previous attempts and I can say for certain it is PERFECT this time. I found some shots from when this car was in the paint booth with no suspension/tires and it saved my butt! Got someone who could do gold 1/32" vinyl striping tape for me, and it should arrive tomorrow and then we are in the mix!
