This, of course, is the Wildcat Mario didn't race in the 82 500. I worked on this right after I got it and reached this stage and stopped. I think I wanted to get another one and build Gordy's with this at the same time. I kind of forgot about it, but I should finish it, I'ts so close to being done. Calvin, I need another one, when might you have one to sell me?

That looks pretty darn good.
Well I'm currently redoing the kit, adjusting it and someday I'll figure out how to get someone to do white metal done up. (if we are lucky maybe late this fall?)
All I know is I learned a lot since doing that first resin kit (it was pretty overwhelming)it might not be the easiest kit to build but with some perseverance it can look pretty good.
But thanks for your support back then for an amateur kit builder that didn't know what he was doing.

Looks great, can't wait to see this one done and hopefully one day Gordy's, too. Is that a 70's McLaren F1 back there on the bench?

Your work is really good so I hope you finish this. I also have two editions of the Belond Spl. sitting on my work space so I understand having too much to do. Jim

I am traveling during the week, so it's just the weekends and then life gets in the way.
Yes, that's a M23 behind the Wildcat. It's in the same state as the Wildcat, I need to finish it. My plan is to build it as the '76 Japan race. There were many mods they did to the car for that race, like duct taping cardboard over the radiators. I have rain tires for it, it could be kinda cool when I get it sorted out.

As I am working to finish this, I remember why I stopped working on it a few years ago. The filler I used was not all the way cured, and was still out-gassing after I painted it, and made some bubbles in the paint. After some time the bubbles have settled down and I am going to finish it as is. It seemed I just needed to put it together, but I want to add some detail to it. I think it best to do all the work to the body first, then add the suspension and wings, as I would probably break them off. It's coming along, I will see how far I can get on it this weekend.

FYI for everyone, I'm still working on reissuing this kit with some updates.

Looks great. It is coming together well and I think you did a good job on getting a shade of blue that looks right for this car. I think it will look really good once it is all buttoned up.
This build does bring up a few questions for me (forgive me, I was still 4 when Cooooogan became infamous). I figured the #20's shade of blue was a nod to the longstanding Petty/STP relationship, right? Why this dark blue for Mario's car? Just to visual distinguish team cars on track or some other reason?

Jordan Correct about Johncock using "Petty Blue". No idea why Mario had the dark metallic blue - they only used it in 81 and 82 with Mario. I wonder if it was a play on the Essex car he had driven the year before? In fact, there is a picture of what I think was a 1980 cat painted up in the Essex scheme? Perhaps Mario was originally bringing that to the team when Essex collapsed in April of 81.

I personally like the dark metallic blue STP scheme....I think it goes just as good as the traditional dayglo and Petty blue.

The 81 and 82 Patrick team was one of the best looking Indy car teams ever.
