I am loving the seat belts. How did you make them or where did you find them Am enjoying this WIP. I too have had many paint problems. The one I am working on now, I had to strip the paint and start over. Second try I got a really good paint job and I am not touching it for at least a week. kip

They are mostly from a decal sheet that Indycals sells. I cut them out with the backing paper on them and blackened the backs and edges with paint. I added the Simpson decals from a detail masters set and also added the photo etched buckles. The Detail master set was so hard to make, I had to give up and used this hybrid method. I think it looks good anyway and will be using a similar set up on the Lotus 29.

Fourth paint job is done. There are still 2 areas on the bottom that the paint is not dry. It is still sticky. I have no idea why. The model sat in Simple Green for a week, so it is not mold release. I have chosen to ignore it. After sitting for 3 days I added the decals tonight. I must say I have never worked with decals that are so fragile. I sure am thankful that Lance included 2 sets. I used most of them. So without further adieu, on to the pictures. I will let is sit for a couple days and then glosscoat it.

This is such a cool car and I don't know how I missed it. I used to use a dehydrator when I lived near the Bay, but here in Sonoma it nice and finally dry!

This is a great build, well done. I sure do miss the wild and unusual racers like this.

This is an interesting and well done build. Thanks for sharing. The aerodynamics of this car must have been awful. I remember him getting booted out of the qualification line on the final day when the officials raised the hood they found a case of Miller. Imagine that happening today. Not. But what memories of a great racer. Jim

Thanks, all! I have had fun(except for the paint issues) building this kit. The hose clamps came from Detail Masters.

Really glad to see such a fine job of building such a storied car! You certainly did it justice. Well done! Olympia next, right after a Miller? When do you start Miss Budweiser? --Frank

This Mallard is done very well, thanks for sharing the build with us. The finished result is impressive and should really stick out in your builds. A very odd piece of Indy history, but so out there that it is cool.

Really enjoyed this. It looks great. I hope you will do your Olympia as a WIP under the general category. Calvin does his hydroplanes there and I really enjoy watching those being built. (By the way Calvin, its about time for another of your boats. I know you have a stockpile. Time to drag one out and entertain me.) Also, I think you have proven that there are carry over skills between the genres. I always enjoy learning new techniques.

When I think of Olympia I think of this.... www.rcboatcompany.com/files/1976_U-74_Olympia_Beer_Hull_7474.jpgYeah....I have so much other stuff going on that pulling out a fun hydroplane is not going to happen anytime soon.

I want to see the Olympia build (which kit?). I was on her a few years back...stood on the bridge with my goatee..."You may fire when ready Gridley!" Such an experience with history! I could not believe the woodwork.
