OTHER BUILDS HAVE GOTTEN IN THE WAY BUT I DECIDED TO PULL THIS ONE OFF THE SHELF AND GET BACK ON IT 3 1/2 YEARS AFTER STARTING IT. I WAS AMAZED THAT MANY (NO ALL) THE ORIGINAL PHOTOS ARE STILL VISIBLE SINCE PHOTOBUCKET WENT AWOL. I recently got this old conversion of Duke Nalon's 1948 Novi. The builder did a pretty good job but I feel I can take it to another level. It wasn't very detailed and the steering wheel protruded from the middle of the dash and the dash gauges were a printed decal. The windscreen wasn't very good either and the tires were way undersized. It even had smaller wheels on the front than the rear. At first I thought that the car was made out of wood until I really started looking at it. It had a crack in the body near the tail so I stuck in a small screw driver and a large chunk of filler popped off. As I chipped away more of the filler I discovered that the car is solid cast steel. (Almost chrome) As i chipped away I found a lone screw in the bottom of the car and removed it. This caused the body to crack in the center and reveal that it was two pieces. I stopped there and put the car in a strip bath and after clean up this is what I have to work with. I was going to cut out the louvers on the hood because they were in the wrong position but I decided not too. The casting is so thick that I was afraid I would really damage the body if I cut into it. I decided to make a mold of the louvers and cast them in resin. Then I can simply sand the old louvers away. I was hoping that after I stripped the car that I could tell who the manufacturer was but there are no markings on it. The body is full of pits and scratches so I now see why the original builder covered the entire car in filler. My work is cut out for me! I plan to redo the car and do a bunch of body mods so I can be as true to the original car as I can. Curbside of course. Anybody know who manufacturer of this car? I thought maybe it was originally a wind-up toy but I think it's way to heavy and big for that. Maybe it was a thether car? After removing all the filler I found a few large holes in the body but there was nothing inside the two halves. This is the goal!

Very interesting, looks like it is thick gauged steel or die cast. This will be interesting to follow. What scale is it?

Wild project, Stu. Looks like the front grill opening isn't quite right either, huh? It will be challenge but I know you can and will conquer it. Will be inspiring to see you make this into a good representation of this historic Novi.

I don't remember you ever starting out with as basic a "lump" as you have here Stu. This is going to be a fun one to follow.

Ha! Thanks Paul.
My idea of a vacation is sitting at the modeling table and no one bothering me. My wife is the one that wants to go somewhere... I can feel the modeling withdrawls already...

Every time I go to the museum I know it is not real and I know it is there but the Buddy Rice figure climbing out of the car freaks me out every time.

Sorry to leave you guys hanging on this one but the metal is so thick on this turd it's chewing up my cutting disc fast. Another update soon.
Yes, I am pretty sure the figure in the car is supposed to be Danica and not Buddy rice. And no, I didn't sniff the seat! LOL

LOL Was pretty sure that's her lid, too, but couldn't think of Buddy's helmet colors. But after thinking about it, Buddy ran a Red Bull helmet with large silver and blue squares like the cans. So, yeah that's supposed to be Danica - no sniffing required!! Stu, man you are tackling a beast here. I'm sure you will best, can't wait to see an update. Jordan

Pretty sure that's Lance Sellers looking at the model display. He's researching his next project - a hyper-detailed 1980's sprint car. Can't wait!

Back on the Novi. The metal is so thick I dread grinding on this thing but it's coming along. I had to add the steering linkage holes to both sides and cut out the metal dash and seat. Have to yet move the front axle holes back and finish modifing the nose. Soon, I hope to start to body filler work.

I glued the two halves together and am shaping the front opening. Lots more to do and making the grill will be a challenge in itself. After I get the shape of the opening I will dip the whole body in fiberglass resin. Then I can start shaping it as well and add the louvers to the correct locations.
