I always thought that the air boxes were somewhat not needed since the engines are turbo-charged. Looks like they will be deleted next year? Calvin and Greenlight are going to have to re-tool!
From Pruett's tech mailbag Can you give us an update on where the aero kits from Chevrolet and Honda stand? Is Tino Belli at a point where he can share any info on what to expect racing wise, or looks, or issues that have been worked through? Derek McElheny MP: It’s still an evolving process. Aero kit manufacturers and teams have a rough schedule of when they will be delivered, and those dates are based on the start of the 2015 season, which is still TBD. Look for the overhead snorkel air intakes to go away, but the sidepods won’t look too far removed from what’s on the DW12s at the moment. As for how they will race, that won’t be known until we have cars on the track. Manufacturers can use CFD to simulate many things, but real world running is required to know how both kits perform while interacting on the racetrack.

I talked to a guy at Greenlight several months ago and he said they were going to retool when the aero kits came out. I'm not holding my breath!

I really don't understand why people get such a bug up their butt about air boxes. The ones they have now are barely noticeable, and they offer more sponsorship area. They're much better than those goofy snorkels they late 90s/early 2000s cars had.

IMO the airbox/no airbox thing is a residual from the split battle. CART folks hate airboxes (but loved the early '70's F1 cars) and the IRL folks love them (but hate F1, just in general.) How's that for some over generalized mularky?
So, personally, I don't really care about the airbox. I've gotten used to the looks of the DW12, though my personal dislike is for what I call (inaccurately, of course) "spats" - the huge lumps in front of the rear tires. The DW12 makes Kim Kardashian look like Jessica Alba, butt-wise...
I'm sorry, where was I. One mention of Jessica Alba and my mind wanders.
Hopefully we can get some nice graceful ramps in front of the rear tires. As far as the aero kit, that's my wish.

I am excited for the aero kits because I fell in love with IndyCar when there were no airboxes, so I prefer them that way. I remember my first 500 being struck by how low slung the cars were as the rolled by onto the grid so that's where I think this preference for the look of low profile engine covers comes. As far as snorkels, airscoops, etc I find the engineering behind the different kinds interesting, so they never bothered me. I am not sure if aero kits can have them?? Not sure of the rules. The DW12 probably has the smallest airbox of the IRL era but I still preferred other concepts due to the no airbox look.
I do think aero kit competition will be interesting to see, I believe they will get to alter the engine cover and sidepods. I forget if there are other pieces!? I think they are only doing the kits at superspeedways, at least that was the last that I saw.

The airboxes are questionable but what is NOT are the rear bumpers. Please let's gid rid of those things ASAP! Can't deny that the DW12 is racey and has put on a good show but it is so butt ugly. The safety arguement of those bumpers is weak IMO.

I am an old CART guy but that does not mean I dislike the airboxes. Some are very cool and bring me back to the old F1 days where boxes were the norm. I look at it purely from the technical side as I always thought airboxes were used on normally aspirated engines only. That's why I was puzzled the use of an airbox now that the cars are turbocharged again. Obviously, if they are thinking of omitting them, they never had a purpose in the first place.
As for the bumpers they do not bother me. I believe their purpose is vital and I believe guys like Dan Wheldon and Jeff Krosnoff would still be here today had they been around before.

F1 switched to turbo this year and they have also retained their air boxes. Of course F1 cars have legitimate design issues that make the air boxes positively gorgeous in comparison

I think they should dump air boxes and engines covers and just run exposed engines then everyone would be happy then!

Whatever happens, I hope Greenlight, if they retool, they wait for a while before they make their new mold until they know for sure what the Indy Cars of the future will be. So hopefully this will be easier for customizers as well and a few less complaints for us collectors to deal with
