Seriously, I rank Mario as one of the 4-5 greatest drivers of all time, but I'm a fan and have been since 1965. I never have a problem with my bud who thinks A.J. is the greatest ever period. We are fans, we're not supposed to be objective.
Though when Raider fans tell me my Chargers suck and the Raiders rule, I realize they arrive at this because of their mental illness, but in other cases we can just expect sports fans to believe their team, driver, whatever is the best. It's part of the short-sighted, us vs. them mentality in this country - my guy/team is the best and your's sucks eggs. No matter the facts. I wish we could be fans just because we connect in some way with that person or team, not because we unrealistically believe our guy or team is truly "the best". That, to me, is a real fan, not a bandwagoner. I am a fan of Mel Kenyon, not because he was a great midget racer or because he had a solid career in Indycars. It's because I met him as a kid and he was nice to me and he was a genuine Indy 500 racer.
I became a fan of Mario because I was at his first 500 and followed his whole, magnificent career since then. The times I have met him he was always nice. Is he the greatest of all time? Who knows, but he's MY greatest of all time.
