I recently reread an account of this race and also just recieved Lance's Etzel Watson roadster. Trying to decide which version of the roadster to build led me to wonder. . . Google shows that Rathman's Miglia di Monza winner is a Watson roadster sponsered by Leader Card and owned by John Zink. The Monza car is red with white on the sides and would require decals be printed- I don't see any existing sheets that could be bashed. Would the Etzel kit be convertible to the Monza car? The nose appears different; maybe adapt a Monogram Kurtis nose or are the dimensions more different? I don't know much about pre-1960 Watsons, maybe they are too different?
Also got to thinking how cool it would be to come up with Moss's Maserati El Dorado. Was this an American car with a Maser engine or was the chassis a factory creation?
Or the big Ferrari driven by Musso with help from Hawthorne and P. Hill. It came third overall ahead of guys like Ward, Sachs, Ruttman, Bryan, etc. It had a 4.1 engine (based on a 375+ LeMans winning engine?) and raced with number 12. A bright red Ferrari on the shelf next to roadsters and such sounds pretty fine too.
Maybe too much to bite off, but nothing's impossible. Thoughts, comments?

The maserati was built in Italy special for Monza and Indianapolis. It came to Indy but did not make the race. I'm not sure about the roadster that Rathman drove but I believe it was the once that Jimmy Reese ran at Indy and was later killed in that car. (Not 100 percent sure of that is how I am remembering it. I also think the Ferrari ran the races without pitting at a reduced speed. TerryB

Indycals has decals for the 58 front row, at one time I produced these, may still have a 58 nose laying around.

Hi Racepark, Rathman's Monza car was the only new Watson in 1957. It was driven at Indy that year by Troy Ruttman. Ed Elisian drove it as #5 in 1958 and bent it up badly in the first lap crash. Rathman put together the Monza deal with Leader Card and Watson. The car later became the DC Trucking Spl. Jimmy Reece did not drive this car. Reece was killed at Trenton in the Bowes Seal Fast car that Bob Veith drove at Indy. The Indycals sheet for the 1958 #5 with some Leader Card markings added should be about right. But you'll need a '58 nose from Lance to get it correct. Hope this helps, Gary

Thanks both Lance and Gary. The #5 1958 Indycals sheet looks perfect. I just would need "Leader Card Monza" markings in white. Is the side of the Monza car white or cream? Lance, I would be very grateful if you have a '58 nose. Thanks

I think the Zink cars of this era had white side panels. I don't recall them ever being cream. Good luck with this. Jim

Slowly getting this going. Thanks Lance for the '58 nose cone. I cut down the tail fin to match pix I've seen. I'm not sure but maybe the headrest needs trimmed too?? Filling in vents, removing scoops adding an air intake, changing the gas filler opening, filling in the roll bar openings More to follow- slowwwllly this summer season.

Really nice!
They used to have this car sitting in the lobby of the hotel. We would have a few barley pops and sit in it when it got late! I have two friends, both deceased, who went to these races with their families. John Lux, or his widow, has one of them filmed on 8mm.
Very cool build.

Using Indycals 1/25 1958 John Zink #5 decal for the sponsor and John Zink markings, the 1/18 same sheet for the numerals and GWS decals for the USAC shields and LeaderCard texts, I roll this car into the winners' circle. Thank you Lance, Michael, Gary and all of you who followed this. . . Ciao for now, Dan Parke
