Thanks for posting this thread. I have always wanted to build this kit but now I know some of it's short comings.
It's hard to beat Lance Sellers work. That's a 65 dollar kit IMO.

This is a beautiful example of many little well thought out details making a big difference on the end product. The execution of those details is inspiring. Great job, thanks for sharing.

The great thing about building indycar resin kits is that you are supporting a persons hard work and passion. I always enjoy the adventure of every different kit.

Don't get me wrong. This is a nice kit. I will admit it is requiring more work and replacement parts than some others I have built, but I am very appreciative that Gary offered it. It is a huge improvement over the Union Vac kit I did. When I say I replaced or added this or that, I am not complaining. I'm just saying what I did and why. I quite enjoy improving a kit or especially adding detail. The last build I did was an Etzel so I was totally spoiled. It was hard to find any place to improve it or add detail. It was already there. Same goes for Lance's kits.

One of the great things about being an Indycar modeler right now is the number of available kits currently being produced. I change almost everything I build, in some way, anyway. That's part of the enjoyment for me. Some extra sanding, etc, is no big deal. The great thing is, if you don't like the price, don't buy it.

For how much work goes into these resin kits..... its basically a labor of Love. Its a ton of work, not everyone can do, its stressful, its very messy, it takes years and years to prefect these kits, the disappointment of parts not coming out is very often.....its a never ending learning curve.
With that said I don't know how Gary D. doesn't this for living?

The forum has been kinda slow lately so I thought I should wrap this one up and post it. The first two pictures are of the restored car and is what I was trying for. (Except in pictures I have from 1959 the wheels don't look as shiny, so I did matte.)And this is my effort. The tires and wheels are from American Racing Miniatures. Paint is Krylon Ballet Slipper Pink. Many thanks to Ed Mautner for close up, detailed photos of the real car (see prior posts). The bolt heads on the tail disc and the oil tank attachment are from the Model Car Garage. The resin is Gary Ducette's. Thanks to Gary for talking me down from the ledge. I know Gary doesn't do the internet so he won't see this. He's one very nice guy and I appreciate his supplying this hobby.

Absolutely incredible! I give this thread and build 5 out of 5 stars! The forum has been kinda slow lately
Its the weekend people aren't at work so they don't have time to goof off and are currently getting beaten in the head with a frying pan from the wife to do chores around the house!

I think my wife would beat me in the head with a frying pan if I didn't disappear downstairs to do modeling. I'm afraid I get underfoot fairly often.

Well that might be a good thing! Maybe more fokes on here needs a wife to kick them to the model building room more often!
Like I said already this is an absolutely incredible build.....its great motivation for anyone that has a passion about these cars.

Not much to add to the previous comments. It's stunning. The heat treatment to the exhaust manifold is perfect. Thanks for sharing this project.

Excellent build! I started the kit, but had to put it away temporarily as it was driving me crazy. Looking at what you did gives me new motivation, but I'll wait until I get a few more projects done 'til I tackle this one again. What color did you use for the pink? It looks really authentic.

I know what you mean. This kit can drive you crazy. It wasn't the easiest kit I've built. The suspension was driving me nuts and I had to put it away for several weeks and work on something else. I talked with Gary a bit and he counseled me to do "one corner at a time". That helped, although I think I used parts from my spare parts box for the entire suspension. The windshield was also a bugger and if I did it again I would vacuum form my own. The paint was Krylon Ballet Slipper Pink. Ed Mautner gave me the pictures of the restored car and also had seen the car before it was restored (Tamiya Pink is probably a good match for the restored car). He said the original was a paler pink than the restored car. Also, a painting I found of the original car seemed to confirm that, so Ballet Slipper it was. I really liked using the Krylon. Was very easy to get a smooth glossy finish. Just used lots of light coats. If you go the Krylon route be careful to get the glossy can because it also comes in matte. cheers, kip

Great! Thanks for the info. I didn't see the first photos of the completed car at first. Then I also saw that you already listed the color that you used. Man- you did an outstanding job! I really like the way you did the headers so they looked like they got hot, and also the way you did the oil tank straps. Unless a person actually saw how rough the kit was they would not be able to appreciate the amount of work you did. I agree that Gary is a great guy, and I think he knows how tough this build is.

Bobbyc, if you want a vacuum form "tray" for the oil tank, (see earlier post) I have an extra one that you can have. The heat treatment on the exhaust was done with Tamiya Clear Yellow, Clear Blue, and Clear Orange bottle paint. I have tried the Tamiya weathering powder (looks like eye shadow) that comes with Burnt Blue and Burnt Red. Its designed specifically for exhaust pipes, but I like the liquid clear paint better; easier to use and looks better.

Hi Kip: Thanks for the offer. Reading your posts and seeing your build got me motivated again. I was just looking at my model before I came up to the computer. I actually did a ton of work already on the damn thing, but just hit a rut and had to put it away for a while. I'd like to take you up on that offer for the tray for the oil tank. Let me know how much you need me to send for postage and I'll pop a check in the mail to you. You can send me your address to my home email address at rcicc59@aol.com. Thanks for the exhaust tip also. I'm not sure if I'm ready to try that yet, but maybe I'll experiment a little bit before I try it on the finished product. I'm going to try and go to the model car contest at Gilbertsville, PA in Sept. Let me know if you think you might go. It'd be neat to hook up. I'd love to see your car in person. Thanks again!

No charge for the tray. Its just sitting there and I have no use for it. Just PM your address and I'll post it right away. Anybody else wants one let me know. I love playing with the vacuum form machine.
The "burnt" look is quite easy and if you don't like what you did, a damp cloth will remove it since its water based paint. I dilute mine a bit to make it flow and mix easier.

Kip: Don't laugh, but I'm not sure how to post a PM, so here's my address: Bob Cicconi 1250 Westtown-Thornton Rd. West Chester, PA 19382 Thanks a lot! I appreciate you sending the tray to me. I also just saw your Racing Associates dirt champ car. Man- that's a great build, too! Let me know if there's anything I might be able to send you for you racing builds. I'm glad to reciprocate. Thanks again!!

For future reference, just go to "Messages" and click on "Create Message". Anyway, I'll send the tray tomorrow. Turns out several other members also wanted a tray so I made some more. I'm going to send you several. I always need at least two of everything cause I usually hack up at least one. I made several different thicknesses so you can use what works best for you. You'll have to cut it down, but the outline of the tray is pretty clear. Save the hardware on the front, it came out pretty detailed.
Am currently working on Hurtubise's 1964 roadster. Using the AMT Watson. WIP on this and the Indy Car Modeling Forum.
Guess I haven't been paying attention, but when I saw your name and address--Wow, I've seen you race. I am in awe. Just --wow. I had no idea.

Won't be able to make it. Going to take a driving tour of the US for 3 or 4 weeks in September. No itinerary, no schedule. Always wanted to do this. I'd like that too. Maybe there will be another opportunity since we live in the same general area.

Will do. If anyone knows where I might see some Indy roadsters--other than the Speedway Museum--please let me know. Also, is the Sprint Car Hall of Fame in Knoxville worth seeing?
