I originally designed this car for Dragon Racing, but Panther picked it up as I designed for the 500 when Dragon failed to qualify. This is my first attempt at this detailed of masking, so I know it's a little rough. ...and the decals (yet to be printed)

Looks good to me. Some tricks to masking. Use good masking tape, burnish the tape down good on the paint side, and when you paint spray upward of the tape not down at the tape. The decals look great. What do you use as a printer? It will look great when the decals go on. I love that part of the job. If I could I would get a job as a decal person. I think that is the only thing I could do for 8 hours. Day in and day out.

I have to scrounge around and find someone to print decals for me, just like you all. It just helps a little that I can do the artwork for someone. A big time saver for them.

My wife has this sweet vinyl cutting machine for crafting. We cut some test vinyl decals for the gold "swoosh" design. I think this looks OK, how about you guys? We will get gold vinyl if people think it looks OK!

Tried to touch up an area and the damn paint didn't match well, now it's totally f'd and I get to start over!
I'm going to try using a reverse of the shape as a paint mask to paint gold...

Going to start over (again!) because I know I can make these shapes look perfect. We're going to let the gold base dry for about a week and then use some "permanent" type vinyl. Think it will bond tighter and prevent bleed.

Another way to approach this: you could paint the vinyl gold and use it as a decal instead of a stencil.

steve -- it's not very sturdy. i'd rather get gold vinyl I felt really proud paint masking the left sidepod, but the right was crappy.

Finally nailed this I think. A little but of "kink" in the sidepod swooshes but I'm not starting over again. This car has been stripped and repainted over 10 times. I'm finally happy!

Looks great Mike. Really like how you kept at this. If I had a dollar for everytime I had to strip and start over... Stu

heh, so i tried to touch up some paint and ruined the whole damn thing...starting over. at least I know I can make the stencil swooshes work by painting over them with the same gold color a second time, then shooting black.

Repaint came out better than before. Even got the masking right for the airbox gold strip. I need to touch up a few places but I think i can do it safely this time!

I do like this car and I am not a fan of the current chassis. Looking forward to a finished model and perhaps this may persuade me to make one like that myself. Looks really interesting.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I'm tying up loose ends and trying to finish some projects before our little Amelia arrives on September 9th. I decided to start over and use some of the skills I've learned over the past year. We put up mosaic backsplash a few places in the house over the winter so I got confident with the Dremel and diamond cutting wheel. I decided to try making the properly shaped rear wing end fences, chop off the wrong camera pod, and am currently making a template for the proper front wing endfences which I am going to cut from a sheet of styrene. I plan to use the camera pod from a DW12 I decided to use for random parts and some experimentation. I think it's too small, but I'll live with it. But, sadly, while refinishing nursery furniture (painted up some beautiful drawer knobs with some hot pink Taymia and Tamyia Pearl Clear -- wife LOVES them) I lost the damn camera, so I'm debating what to do. Don't want to tear up another DW12 donor just for the camera. Also not sure what I'll do about the mirrors. I don't think I have the skills yet to build the proper mirrors so I may just have to roll with the stock mirrors (though it would be a shame with all of the other custom fab) but I'm really excited that I'm building a car I designed in "the real world" for collection. I have some amazing models from Ralph and Stu of many of my livery designs and this in no way lives up to their quality but I'm excited to do one for myself. I used frog tape and burnished the hell out of it but still didn't come out with those amazingly sharp paint lines like Ralph is a master of, so I decided to cheat a little. I got some "dual line" pinstripe in black from AutoZone and cut out the super thin line and used it to sharpen up the color transitions. Cheating, I know, but damned if it didn't work out really nicely. You can hardly tell! Now -- need some advice on paint. I have to paint the mirrors gold to match the decals Gary printed for me but every gold I've tried doesn't match the Alps gold. Anyone have any suggestions on how to match it? The bummer is the gold on the car should actually be the color of the Testors Metallic Gold, not the Alps, but I wanted to do the swooshes and stripes in decal and Gary's decals came out so great so I'm going to attempt to match the Alps gold instead of the "exact" gold that was on the car (a little darker). Now for some pictures! If you've actually read me ramble this far, thanks, and thanks in advance for any advice on gold paint, camera pod part, and the proper mirrors. I goofed on the decal sheet I sent to Gary to print and ended up with two left side swooshes and none for the right, so they are absent from the photos which I realize makes this not look very good yet. I ended up tearing one too, so I'm going to hold off until Gary has time to print me the fixed sheet. Pre-decals Some decals I'll snap some photos of the rear wing this evening. I thought I had taken one but I haven't.

Carved out the custom front wing endfennce shapes tonight. Drew them up in 2D vector art with Illustrator, printed to some spare shipping labels and carved from the template, stuck on to a sheet of styrene. Purple in the image are the "templates" and the two I Sharpie'd up black for test fitting are styrene. A little bit of light sanding with Dremel and we will be ready to paint! Anyone out there selling the "windowed" Dallara mirrors and proper camera pod? Those are the last 2 parts I am missing to make this sucker accurately shaped.

Got bored, decided to try and dress up the junky engine and the ugly green GoDaddy air intake this donor came with. I dunno if I will glue the engine cover down or not but I figured why not!

Too quiet around here!!! After a lot of effort, starting over, learning new tricks, etc. this is actually becoming REAL! I'm still ISO exhausts, camera pod, and mirrors for the 2011 Dallara if anyone has some cast that they'd be willing to part with. I'm calling this one about 85% complete. Need to make a few more decals that didn't show up in the photos I had when I originally made the sheet. Also, I inadvertently bought the wrong tire decals (that's why you don't see one on the RR inside...i said screw it and ordered the right ones) so I'm waiting on those. I also custom fabricated some aluminum front wing endfences in the proper shape which are still drying and need to be glued on. Lastly, need to decal and clear the front wing and paint the rear wing uprights black. A few other minor detail items I plan to do, and this baby is going in the showcase as my best build to date! I'm absolutely beaming over the fact that I was able to get this to come out so well! Thanks to Gary @ gwsdecals.net for printing the sheet I put together, and he adjusted for proper sizing. Since this came out so well, and I have some spare decals I'm highly considering doing the Scott Speed version. Even though the memories are bad, I still designed the car and should have it in my collection.

Finished! Actually built a second one for my dad this past week. Knocked it out in no time! I'm getting the hang of it! With the new baby, have been taking photos of her, and haven't taken a photo of this finished car, but here is one before I glued the right FW endfence on, and fixed the rear tire decal. Very happy with the custom endfences I was able to make with the dremel and a sheet of aluminum!
