In 1994, I had the pleasure and honor of heading a group of very talented modelers that put into the Indy 500 Hall of Fame Museum a 1/25th display of past winning cars. This display was supposed to only be in the museum for two years. It has now been 14 years and several modelers have removed their models. Many holes need to be filled or refilled.
With so many new kits and builders out there, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in doing some work with us to fill the holes? Now, your work would be on display for sometime and millions of people would enjoy it. Just drop me a note if you are interested for I am contacting he museum soon about this. There is no pay, just the satisfaction of having your work on display at Indy. Best to you!

I'm no master craftsman like some I see on here, but I'd be up for it if deemed worthy.
On a similar note, on another board they have been talking about doing a diorama of the complete field for one of the World 600s, I think 1970. Would the museum be interested in anything like that? We must be close to being able to do 1988 or so.

A diorama of the '88 field would look pretty awesome. Having all 33 cars setup as they come down the front to take the green flag would be awesome. I have actually been working on that myself, but I only plan to do the first 3 rows. I've done the Penske front row, now I'm working on the 2nd row.

I have thought about it and '88 or '89 would probably be doable as there are plastic kits for the various cars. More recent fields with the most/all Dallaras would be easiest because of the ease of getting references and fewer variations but man it would be pricey. It is an ambitious project though but hey I'd volunteer to do a few... I like '88 but hey I'm a big Rick Mears fan!! ;D

Okay....Here's the latest scoop on this. If you have any other questions, just write me here.
There is limited space avialable. If any of you have seen the display, you know what I mean. What is needed is a few holes filled. Most the winners from the last few years and some odd years in between. A diorama of a whole filed would be cool, but is out of the question at this time. Only past winning cars. Heck, I'd like a display of Novi's and turbines....both were cool and there are kts avialable of both, but just past winning cars. As for the cost, we'll see about taking care of that for you. Just 1/25th scale as well......Keep it all the same.
I am waiting a call from a guy in Indy as to what is need at the present time. I'll keep you posted! Thanks!

Hello Everyone...Here's the latest on the display at Indy.
Here are the years we have in the display so far. 1911, 12, 20, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 31, 37, 38, 40, 47, 51, 52, 53, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 79, 80, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92, 95, 96, 97.
As you can see, we need to fill quite a few gaps! I spoke with Lance Sellers, and Bill Jorgensen tonight. I am going to do the 1964 Winner from Lance's excellent kit. It is by far, the best kit out there. The idea is not only have a model of each year, but have the best looking model as well, from the best kit available. Bill said to me, that if there are any craftsmen hat have done business with him that he knows, and they want to build something for the display and they check things out with me first, he will provide the kit at cost. You can't beat that! If anyone has a model that they have already finished that they would like to see in the display from any of the years needed, just send me a message here. The idea is to get as many completed models as possible.
Once that is done, we are going to pick a date, meet at Indianapolis, put them in the case, have a bench racing session, and dinner. We did this in 1994 and it was a great deal of fun! Nice to meet with modelers that share the same interest and compare each other's work. Just let me know and I'll keep you posted!
Best to you all!!!!

My first choice would be '72. One of my all time favorite cars. 2nd choice would be '78. And 3rd choice would be 2004-Buddy Rice.

I'll take on 1998, 1999 or 2000 but it would be a good idea to set some sort of date/timeframe so we can plan and actually have a goal to get them finished.

Thanks MrIndy....we may take you up on that!
The latest on the project. Now I want everyone to understand; this display went into the Hall of Fame Museum in 1994 and was ONLY supposed to be there two years, but due to it's popularity has been there going on 15 years now. The folks at the museum hase done a study that, out all teh displays there, this one is the most popular by the time people stand in front of it and how many times a day they have to clean the glass in front of it. Once the models go in, they are going to be there a while. In front of your model will be a notice of the cars name, the year it won, who drove it and who built the model. Now this may detract some, but most of the guys got into building models to have them displayed someplace safe and where many people could see them. What better place that the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum? I have been very proud to have many models displayed in different museums across the country and I have always been proud of this display. Hopefully you will be as well.
The idea is to up-date the display in the morning, talk about modeling during the day and pat each other on the back, meet one another and have a great dinner later on! We did this the first time and it was great! Hope to see you there! From the wonderful response I have received so far from you guys, this should be a great deal of fun!
Best to you
Russ

Russ, Count me in. I wouldn't mind doing the 78 winner. I have work with Bill many times. It was actually Bill that put me in touch with the IMS museum when I did the 97 winner. Let me know if I could be of any help of if a different year is needed.

Hi ya Eric!!
I too, really like Buddy Lazier. If you want to do the 1978 winner, you got it! Thanks for doing the 97 Winner too. The last race I went to. At the start of that race I was inside turn one talking to Al Unser Sr. and he was very funny! I'll be in touch. E-mail me your address please.
Best to you
Russ

With all the changes going on at the speedway , just waiting for the dust to settle. Still shooting for a date late March or April to update the display. There is no way we can do anything in May. Will keep you all informed as soon as I know more.

Walt,
What year's winners do you still need. Originally I said I could do the 78 winner but I think someone else said they would in another thread. Could you please post what is still needed.
Thanks, Eric

Don't we have another thread on this somewhere? I know I stated that I'd do 98, 2000 and 2005.
