I started these soon after receiving them, not knowing where I would go with them. The trail took me through putty and primer Ready for color. But which colors? Many build the models of winners or racing legends or unusual cars with interseting stories. But what of those who tried and failed? There were twenty four drivers who failed to qualify for the 1984 Indy 500. Where are the models of those cars? Could I get Michael to make decals for Rodger Mears or Jerry Sneva? Probably not. Oh well, I had these two colors in the paint pile, so I will see where these colors lead my journey.

Given the side pod radiator exits you have, you were pretty much limited to two I look forward to seeing how these progress.

Think "famous racing family" for the red car.

I am on a different journey which takes me out of town during the week, so it's just weekend modeling. My favorite part is decaling , and working with Michael's decals is really fun. I added his rivets and dzus fasteners, and will add the wickerbills. Next weekend on to the Miller decals. I am going to try two part urethane clear for the first time.

Sprayed two part urethane last night. This is my first time using this. I am using PPG DCU2012. Appropriate brand for this series. It was expensive, $100 for a quart, but this will probably last me the rest of my life. Amazing finish. I don't have the photography skills to show how shinny and smooth it is. Now that there is no longer TS13, This is a great alternative. Wish I would have come across this years ago. Looking forward to decaling this later today.

Looks great! If you need any help just let me know, I feel I have the strength to keep up with the forum a little better now.
BTW (a note to all) Michael P. already knows this but make sure to test fit your front A-arm extra good because the will need to be shorten up a little to get the correct front track width. Take a look at my build up, its to wide at the front because the ends of the arms are slightly to to long.

This is as far as I got his weekend. Next weekend I hope to finish with the decals and clear coat. I saw this car at the race in Portland, and it has always been one of my favorites.

These are going to be awesome! Always liked that Miller High Life car. When they added the white with gold trim to the paint scheme at Indy it really popped! Nice job!!

I want you guys to know I haven't lost interest. I am out of town during the week, so only weekend modeling for me. I wanted to try some new things on these, so I had to wait for them to come in the mail. I bought a new airbrush to spray only clear through, and it works great. The two part urethane works really great, and gives a fantastic finish, but it shows every blemish and dust speck. I think I have re-sprayed the clear on the Unser car four times. I still have a few dust specks, but I will try to polish them out. The other thing I wanted to try is a powder for simulating chrome. I hunted it down from Japan, and used it on Calvin's wheels and suspension. You can't really see from this picture, but it is pretty amazing. Much better than what I can get from Alcad 2. you just rub it on over a black base, and it's kind of messy, but wow. I have these almost to the point where I just need to put them together. Hopefully I can do this when I get back home this weekend.

Your paint job is incredible! BTW make sure you test fit you roll bars, because they aren't cut exactly. Its you job to sand it down to the right spot. also please study the suspension, and test fit as much as possible. If you need some tips ask me I'm around basically all the time these days I need to get the instructions done.

I'm still working on these. Getting close, just detail stuff left. It's taking me forever, only being home on weekends and when the weather is nice it's tough to stay inside. Plus, I end up re-doing everything several times. I think about what I did the last weekend, then re-do it when I get home. I have really enjoyed working on these. I have learned allot.

I have reached the end of my journey with these. I want to move on to something else. So many models, so little time. I got stalled on some things I wanted to figure out, and tried a lot of new (to me) techniques. I printed my first decals, (the black surround on the windscreen), and that was a challenge. I used 2 part urethane for the first time. I used a new product for chrome, Kosutte Gin San. This is where I learned about it. It works very well. www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=979823&highlight=sanI really learned a lot working on these. Calvin’s ingenuity and Michael’s great decals were really enjoyable to work with. I used many of Michael’s accessory decals. One thing I haven’t figured out to my satisfaction is the wheel nuts. I used copper tubing for the axel stubs, and if I can come up with the right nut to put on there it will look very realistic. I tried several different things and spent a lot of time looking for a nut that would work, but I have not come up with anything that is satisfactory. Anyone have any ideas for this? Now, what to build next? I think I will build the winning cars from the 80’s. I have one of each, except 81, and Lance has that one on the horizon, and 89, but I could fudge that with an 88 Penske. So Senva and Fabi are next.

Beautiful work! Of course I'm biased to the Mears car but the red/white Miller is a classic beauty. Very inspiring work!
