Some time ago, I developed a project to group a whole lot of my models into one large display. Hence was born the idea of the "Humble Motor Sport Museum". Taking this cupboard as my starting point: I modified the shelf arrangement to create several levels. Each of these levels was meant to represent a vehicle "gallery" (similar in concept to Donnington, which I was lucky enough to visit in 2010) whith a particular theme. The "entry foyer" is in 1/24th scale, and features a mix of F1 and Indy cars. Gallery 2 is 1/24th Sports cars of a European flavour, Gallery 3 1/24th Can-AM and US endurance racers, plus Japanese endurance racing, Gallery 4 will be 1/20th McLaren F1 and Can-Am cars, Gallery 5 1/20th Louts F1 cars, with galleries 6 and 7 devoted to 1/20th F1 cars. So far, most of the "entry foyer" builds re complete, as are most of Gallery 2 - European sports cars (5 Porsches, 3 Ferari's etc). I have built a generic lighting "shelf" that fits into each "Gallery" (Lighting one at a time) using some old CHristmas Tree lights: Here you can see an early test of the lighting concept: plus and early tesy of the "entry Foyer" layout: Here is a test shot of the European Sports Car gallery using the lighting panel:

This is really cool. Figuring out a way to display our cars is always a challenge. Too many cars and too little space. I really liked your lighting idea. Jim

Scran,
How many models in the museum so far and how many of those started out as glue bombs (previously built that you refurbished)?

Hey! Just noticed your nice BT33! What color did you use for the body?

Robh - initially planned all new builds. Then I bought a "box" of 1/20th kits already built from another guy - and 4 of those have been re-furbished to go into the museum.
Patrick - I've got reference pics for BT33's that show a blue as well as a green-ish blue car. In the end I chickened out and just used the Heller molded body colour and added the yellow racing strip with Taimya X-8,

Ian,
high praise indeed. Thank you.
Love your concept as well. Mine isn't quite as mobile, but i am enjoying the creation of the museum.
Will keep you updated as to progress.
Regards,
Dave

You've got some good builds on the way there. This is going to look so great when it's all done Dave. It's so much better to see cars within a proper context in stead of lined up on shelves. I'll be following with interest. Thanks for your kind words. Ian

Dave, I dont think many people realize the hours and hours of hard dedicated work that goes into a project like this Excellent job , I see the word "Done" will it ever be Done? I mean building new models and finding new items to add!!! Not be being Done is a good thing in this case! Please update us on any changes or additions, this has been a Great Project that I am sure You are Very Proud Of! Chris

Chris, you bring up a very good point. like any museum, its never 'done'. its constantly evolving, much like any living entity. Dave was the one that gave it life and now he must continue to feed it to keep it growing. ok, yea....that sounds a bit like Dr Frankenstein. LOL

Ah yes - done is an interesting word.
There is one more car (three-quarter complete) to go into the entry foyer, then that "level" is done.
Two more to complete Gallery 1 (one car three-quarter complete, the other just started).
Then there are pretty much all the Lotus cars (the "Loti"?), the McLaren's etc. Conservatively there are another 40 cars to build until the museum is full!
Oh, and the financial controller (wife) will ensure there are no more new galleries or exhibits!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the comments guys - it IS a labour of love - and I'm glad you think it is half-way decent..............

HALF-WAY!!! Dude, that setup is the"Bomb". It set an explosion of ideas and a wave of "I could do that 's ", that will ring all the way to 16th Street. It is an OUTSTANDING use of space. Congratulations. Its a winner! -Zoomer

Guys,
Thank you for the kind words - I am truely humbled by your comments.
I'll try and keep a reasonably regular update of going's on in the Museum - the staff there are hard at work (and this weekend I hope to post a 'teaser" pic showing what I mean by that staement) on the exhibits.

The teasers I mentioned: As exhibits start to move into the Humble Museum, the engineering staff are kept busy preparing and positioning the cars for display. Here three of the engineers carry out some restoration work on Red 5 - Nigel Mansell's FW13B: The story behind this: Earlier I mentioned that although most of the exhibits will be "new" builds, I did acquire some cars from another guy. Seen here are three of them. The Ferrari 312T required no repair, nor did the Williams FW07. The FW13B however, has broken front suspension and wing. WHile I probably could have repaired the car (or at leat make it look reasonable) I decided that displaying it like this would help give the museum that "lived-in" type of feeling. There will be one other car displayed not complete - I have a Renault RE30B that came with these cars missing the nose cone. Complete except for that - so will be dipsplayed that way. In addition, 1 McLaren MP4-8 (I have 2 new builds) in the Mclaren gallery will be displayed with the top body removed and some additional "stuff' put on to detail the model. Hope you guys enjoy!!!
