I just started reading a book named "Blood and Smoke"... "A True Tale of Mystery, Mayhem, and the Birth of the Indy 500." 2011, by Charles Leerhsen. So far a very colorful tale of the state of early auto racing, mindset of the daring (nay, deranged) and colorful figures that drove those snarling beasts, and the construction of the most hallowed track in the history of auto sports. In light of the most recent fatality we are reminded that death and auto racing have always been as tightly intertwined as a Ferrari wire wheel. The first fatality associated with the track was during the parade of race cars heading out to the track for the very first race in 1909. A definite Must Read for the Indy fan!
Now, if you will excuse me I Must get back to my book!

The perspective of that lovely book are certainly subjective but without question, it paints a wonderful picture of racing and life in that colorful era. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the history of the sport we love.
