I came into this late and have only seen one replay (I am kind of glad I didn't see it live or I would probably be in the fetal position right now). I am assuming Dan's car was the dark one and the second one to go airborne was Will Power's. I can't think straight right now.

Wikipedia is reporting (unsubstantiated) that DW was killed in the crash. I pray that this isn't true. It really sucks to be a race fan today.

A great quote from Steve McQueen from the flim "LeMens"....
"A lot of people go through life doing things badly. Racing’s important to men who do it well. When you’re racing, it... it’s life. Anything that happens before or after... is just waiting."
Prayers for Dan...

It’s so ironic, the guy that’s been working so hard on the newer, safer car and then looses his life in the old car…..
The new car should be named a Wheldon.
I pray that God will comfort Dan’s wife, family, friends and team members. This is just so sad……

I haven't felt this empty about the death of someone I didn't know since golfer Payne Stewart died in 1999. There is something crappy about a guy being taken in the prime of his life, leaving behind a young family, after winning a major championship. In Stewart's case, he had won the US Open that June and we all know Dan had won Indy in May. It just doesn't seem fair.

A few years ago, my son was at the autograph session before the Chicago race. When he got Dan's autograph he mentioned that my youngest daughter was a huge fan of his. Dan told my son to call her on his cell phone. After dialing, Dan took the phone and left a message for her. A great guy. Right now, I feel almost like I have lost a personal friend. RIP Dan. Take Care Craig

My kids are taking it very hard. They've grown up with Dan since they were 7 and 9. They're 14 and 16 now and got to meet Dan in the garages this year. Very broken up. Damn good man and a damn good driver. Can't believe it.....

Last time I felt this bad was 1993, when in Nascar we lost Kulwicki and Davey Allison. Wheldon is kind of similar to Kulwicki in that he tended to bond with the fans a bit more since he was something of an underdog and given the fact that he was able to give color commentary during the races where he had no ride showed his cool personality. Like Kulwicki who won the Winston Cup in 1992, Wheldon goes out a champion, an Indy 500 Champion!!!!
I will give credit to the doctors though. According to Paul Tracy, they had probably every medical person in the infield care center not involved with other drivers tending to Dan. They tried REALLY hard and did everything they could. They didn't give up until the end and would not have if they thought he had a chance.

The day Senna died I was watching live at 5am, I sat in shock and cried for hours..that day changed my life, today when I saw the face of Rodger Penske my heart sank and I knew something was not good. My mind tells me "They are professional athletes and they know this can happen at any moment while pursuing their dream of big time racing", my heart tells me " A fine young man, a family man and my thoughts and prayers go out to his Wife, 8 month old Baby, to his Family and Fans" Having been close to the death of Swede Savage this kind of thing is never easy and it never should be, We should keep Him, his family and all those who adored his talent in our thoughts and prayers. I don't believe anyone has the right to point fingers, blame or defame this sport we all choose to love....R.I.P. Dan Weldon 1978-2011...Chris

Nice pics. I'm guessing these were taken the day after the race?

Actually taken the Sunday of opening day weekend. My daughter just did a tribute video for Dan. I was trying to figure out how to get the thing on this stupid photobucket to get it on here.
Going to crash out now. What a suck day. For what it's worth, we DVD'd the race (or the 13 laps) while we were at a 4-H meeting. Got home to see the cars running on this parade lap. I thought for a minute that the Kentucky race was being repeated for some bizarre reason. Then, no commentary, lots of tears and long faces and my daughter went into hysterical crying after logging online to see what had happened. Lousy evening. Reviewed the post-mortem to try to get a little closure. The guy felt like part of the family.
