Is everyone aware that they are running the old cars at Indy TODAY!! instead of on fast Friday? And nobody is there to watch them.
This was THE best day all month so why did they move it? Anybody know?
Stupid, Stupid idea!

You mean they're running the old cars before the track technically opens to the public tomorrow? Who's bright idea was that!?

Sorry, Carb Day: you are correct Michael. They are running as I write this 2:00 5/13. I plan to ask Donald Davidson what happened.

Those old crap wagons leak too many fluids onto the racing surface...it takes weeks to clean it up.

Some of the car owners were staying at our motel last night. They were not exactly overjoyed by the lack of support/promotion and organization with this event. They were saying that a rumor had circulated out to the public that the event was CLOSED to the public. I and about a grand total of maybe a dozen people were in the south terrace stands to watch the event. Most of the people in attendance otherwise were with the cars or had been with the antique cars which preceded the Indy stuff. REALLY REALLY cool show that these guys put on. Parnelli was actually out driving when one of the drivers couldn't show. Over an hour's worth of track time altogether for the three groups. It's pitiful that IMS didn't promote this at all. They MIGHT have actually made a buck off of this if they had.

IMS is ignorant of the fact that the Classic Car races in Monterey( or any where else for that matter!!) makes big bucks and is attended by zillions of enthusiasts! The group must be a bunch of chumps!!

Exactly what one of the car owners was saying. The best show these guys have put on and nobody to watch it.

I talked to Donald Davidson yesterday and he said that the car owners loved it because they got to do considerably more laps. He said that the old way of running them on carb day didn't give them enough time since the concert would start then and they did not even get P.A. time to talk about the cars. Well whose fault is that?
Well is this a race or a concert? The Speedway could schedule enough time if it wanted too. Since record speeds will never return, The running of the old cars is the second best event all month, especially for us modelers! Now that marketers run the speedway instead of race fans they have no idea of what a great event this could be.
Stupid, stupid idea!

There has been a lot of talk about why these events were separated by two weeks. I only knew about it because I know someone in that circle who lives here in the East. I know there were people in Indiana who weren't even aware.

I work with Indy Car as an official in Timing and Scoring and happened to be at the Speedway on Friday to get my credentials. I was amazed to see the old cars coming into the pits. There was virtually no publicity and, lucky me, I just happened to be there. The three best cars that I saw were Tommy Milton's '23 winner and Frank Lockhart's winner done in 1927 livery. The same man owns both and the restoration on Milton's car was just finished. They are both just pristine treasures. The third car was the Joel Spark's companion to Robsen's 1946 winner that is the cover car for Karl Ludvigen's "Indy Cars of the 1940s." I also saw the other Novi and Foyt's 1959 or 1960 Bowes Seal Fast laydown. There were almost no fans in the stands and I just lucked into this. So sad to be missed by so many. Donald, bless him, is the last person who just run something like this or have major control over the IMS Museum and its archives. These owners really put themselves out to do this. Not a good start for the month (two weeks) of May. Jim

Patrick .....you are just now figuring out what i discovered years ago. i was once as diehard 500 supporter as you would ever find- im sure however that the great minds that run ims spent many hours (and dollars)trying to figure out how to get generation x, y, and zers into carb and race day.....

The amount of alloted running time was great. The lack of promotion, as stated, was the problem. Hadn't heard a word about a pole day appearance. The whole place just had a total air of disorganization this weekend. The only high points on opening day were the appearances by Parnelli and Sullivan and the fact that some teams managed to get some laps in.

On the subject of moronic behavior, silver badge in hand, I was turned away from the credential gate 9A yesterday and was told that I could not come in. After failing the exhaustive three day testing, the two geniuses at Gate 9A were apparently still hired. I simply went down to the next gate and was admitted. It seems as if they invent new ways to make things difficult for the participants. On a similar note, a truck bearing a backup car for Newman Haas was also turned away. In the parking lot behind the garage area, a soldier IN UNIFORM was escorted out of the area simply for walking around and looking at the trucks. Yellow shirts: Can't live with them and can't shoot them. They have long been a black eye for IMS and it just goes on and on.

What real fan of American open wheel racing actually wants to watch this race anymore anyway? Make a statement to IRL since they are oblivious and give them a bunch of empty seats! Then go to Kokomo on Sunday evening and watch some real racing!

Shot video, but didn't have the camera. Nice to know I'm not the only one with a feeling of a "malfunction at the 16th St. Junction." Pretty bad when the yellow shirts are kicking service guys out of areas that they shouldn't be getting hassled in. But this aside, in all fairness, even the yellow shirts weren't getting a straight game plan for the weekend. These little event flyers that are normally passed out at the gate never appeared until later in the morning. I pretty much knew the game plan, but the average guy/gal off the street was scratching their head.
