It Crosses the Yard of Bricks!!!Old CalhounFinally finished with a day to spare. This one fought me a wee bit, but it's done! And it's a good one foot model, meaning that if you look at it from a foot away, it's not too bad. A view that many saw that May 30 of 63...... I want to thank all that gave me encouragement when things got tough, to Micheal at Indycals for doing a FANTASTIC decal sheet for the beast, and to my friends...see, if I can do it, you can too. I'm looking forward to my next build....redoing a 1922 Murphy Special Glue Bomb..... Best to you!! Russ

Awesome! Well built. I like how you added the extra part to the windscreen and the starter shaft (or whatever they call it?) I know I will be building one soon.
Thank you for all the great ideas on this build.

Thanks for your perseverance on this one Russ - it is much better than you give it credit for.

WEll, Sheriff Bart! It came out pretty good. Maybe not quite up to your standards, but it fought you tooth and nail! ;D Glad you stuck with it, it will help MANY builders to go through the WIP.

Nice job for sure Russ but shouldn't it be leaking oil? ;D Just a little humor...
Thanks for all the step by step. You should publish a "How To" book! Stu

Hi ya Stu...
Believe it or not, Parnelli is still, after all these years a bit defensive over 1963. As he told me, "I was the one driving the beast...and my lap times didn't drop...and the oil was going onto my rear left tire."
If you watch the films of the race, especially the new "First Turn Production" of the 1963 race, you'll see the oil was all over Old Calhoun....and it was smoking badly. But, Sachs spun no where near Jones and McClusky spun in front of Parnelli and he had to go around Roger.
As I explained to Parnelli, you won the race and as Rodger Ward said, "If you are going to throw the black flag at a driver who is leading the 500, you'd better be damn sure he is the only one causing the trouble on the track....Which Parnelli wasn't that day."
I love watching to old films of the 1963 500......The move Hurtubise pulled on the first lap!!!!!1 Classic!!!
Best to you!

Thanks for the very kind words Tom. As I said before, this is a good one foot model so keep your distance. As Mongo said, this is not the best effort I have ever done on this car. The next one, (Yes, there will be another one using Lance Sellers Conversion Parts.) will be much better. I took some notes along the way. I really LOVE the old Watson Roadsters. The sight and sound of the beast in just Indianapolis to me. The way they looked and who drove them.......Men with guts of granite! And sometimes a real nut gets to sit where his heroes did. This is a replica built by Ronnie Ward, Rogers;' brother with the help of a guy named Watson and is owned by Tom Malloy and he once said I could drive it...sometime. Ah...to be older....... Best to you! Russ

Outstanding Russ! It was fun to read how you tangled with "The Beast" and bested him! This is why I like this group so much. Thanks Russ.

Your model is really beautiful!!! I have one of those sitting on my to do shelf, with Indycals Decals. If mine turns out half as good as yours, I'll be happy.
Again, nice work,
Dave

I agree with you 100% Sandy, with the possible exception of Wilbur Shaw's 39 & 40 Winning Maserati and Foyt's 64 winner, "Ole Betsy." I love front engine race cars!
Best to you!
