One of the most over looked cars of the 70's IMO that has some of the best looks, is the Lightning. Especially Pancho Carter's Budweiser Lightning Cosworth.

Jim Clark’s 1965 Lotus 38 Joe Leonard’s 1968 Lotus 56 Mark Donahue’s 1971 McLaren M16 Johnny Rutherford’s 1980 Chaparral 2K Mario Andretti’s 1987 Lola T8700
I also could pick at least another 5, and if we broadened this to include CART cars during the separation, I could add couple of them also. Also, I was never a big fan of the front engined cars, but two that stand out with me are Wilber Shaw’s Alfa and Freddie Agabashian’s Cummins Diesel Special.

There are so many so I am only going to pick from the one's I actually saw run at the Brickyard...very tough to just to pick 5, but here you go... 1) 1968 STP Lotus Turbines-my 1st race!! 2) Johnny Lightning Colts 1970-71 3) 1973 STP Eagles...actually any STP car- fell in love with the day-glo red paint in '68 at my 1st race. 4) 1981 Interscope Special-most beautiful modern day Indy Car design! 5) 1995 Player's Reynard
If I could actually own one of these cars-1973 STP Eagle!!

D! All the above. I'm in the same quandry as most of you. Just 5 is too hard to pick from, but if I had to, I'd start with and not neccessarily in this order.
Anything between 65 and 72 70/71 Colt 82 Wildcat 81/82 Penske PC9/9b Penske PC10 84 March 94 Penske....whhooops I guess I went overboard.....

In danger of going a bit overboard on this topic...
May I list my favorite Indy Cars I actually saw run in person I'd have to start with Hurtubise's Mallard, which I aw him drive at the old Ontario Motor Speedway. Somehow, my older brother...(Through a friend he worked with knew Mario Andretti...) got pit passes and he took pity on me and took me with him. Now, he's ten years old than I am and didn't much care for me, but I was in heaven!!!
I was 12 I think and there was Herk himself working on this beast! My brother said it was the last front engine Indy Car I'd ever see run and it was beautiful....to me. I stood about 6 feet away from Herk and saw him take off his driving gloves....HIS HANDS WERE BLEEDING FROM DRIVING THIS CAR! His hands were a mess! Someone said that I'd like to drive the car, which I did and Herk said, "If you think you can get more out of the bastard than I did, be my guest!" He was joking of course. Herk was great and signed my program, which I still have.
Then, there was the time I first interviewed Parnelli Jones at his office. I took along a few of my models to have him autograph them for me. (Which he did, and that started me building for Parnelli too.) He spoke about the memorabilia around his office and sitting on his desk as a very poor Matel Hot Wheel type 1970 Johnny Lightening Special. I made comment about him once being with Topper Toys and how I still had a few Johnny Lightening Cars....and he made comment about still having the real ones. Now, I had heard that the 70 winner and he 71 were the same, modified cars. NOT TRUE!!! The he said he had the 70 Johnny Lightening Special down stars and wold I like to see it! Before I knew it, we were standing in front of the car. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL CAR!!! I don't know what color it is, but it is not purple like the toy upstairs. The he asked me if I cared to sit in it, which I did. WOW!!! Parnelli is very proud of that car, he stated, "When the 500 was done, that car still had all of it's oil in the engine...even with Al hitting a bird and it was lodged in the front radiator, it didn't burn a drop of oil." Since that first visit, I have sat in many of Parnelli's race cars...from Joe Leonard's 72 Parnelli to the Lotus 56 that he used to own. When he asked me if I would like to sit in the Lotus that Clark put on the pole in 64...I said no and I wouldn't dare to blow Louis Armstrong's Trumpet either! Someplace's, you just don't go!
Best to you!

the first racecar i ever saw with my own eyes was scott sharp on pole day in 95 so i have always had a soft place in my heart for any foyt car. but the coolest thing that ever happened to me happened later that year at mid ohio when i was standing out side raul boesels transporter and a crew guy asked me if i liked indycar and a younger me replied hell yea! so after he laughed for a minute he asked me if i wanted to sit in a car and i of course said yes. so i walked with this guy ( Jim Prescot) and god to sit in boesels car when boesel him self came over and leaned in and showed me all the buttons and how it all worked. so that duracell 95 lola is one of my favorite paint schemes.
