Since I can finally log in to the forum, I need some info. I came across the photo and I cannot find any info or other photos of it. Does anyone know more about this car? Photos maybe?  |

I have no info but that's a stinkin' cool looking car and it would get quite the attention in the display case or on the contest table.

Andy Granatelli had this car built for the 1969 500, it had a Plymouth stock block for power, the body work was change in the front and back but they still couldn't find the speed needed to make the race so they switch to the Lotus Copy with the turbo Offy to make the race.
Granatelli may have had to many differant car to try and get them all to work, he also had the 4wd Lotus's The Lotus copy with the Turbo Offy and a Gerhart Offy, But it all worked out with the Brawner Hawk.
They later won a race at Dover with the Plymouth motor in a Gerhardt with Pollard driving

I believe that somewhere underneath that body is a Lotus copy chassis. The cut-out for the front suspension are very similar to the Lotus 56 and the chassis has slab sides as did the Lotus.

It is commonly referred to as "the Super Wedge" and IMO may be the coolest looking race car ever.

Hummm... info on this car is rare at best. Looks like I found my next scratchbuild project!  It appears to be based on the 56 chassis, but that engine cover looks big enough for a V-12! |

I had some pages from an old italian magazine "Quattrorute" that shows the chassis in the factory. I'll check if i still have these pages and ask for a friend to scan to me and send for you, ok?

There is a picture in the 1969 - 1972 Hungness Yearbook that shows this car at speed, in a turn, the Ludvigson(sp) 1960 book shows a picture of the car without the body work. The entry list for 1969 shows 2 cars, #20 & 30 entered by Granatelli. Both with Plymouth Power.

That is very interesting. It definitely looks like a Lotus 56 with lots of extra aerodynamics. That would make a great project.

The more I see this, the more I want to build one. I think the Lotus 56 might be a good starting point and just might give it a go in the furure.

Now you have no excuse not to build it, lol. If it was based on the Lotus 56B, I wonder if they kept the 4wd.

Hi all,
I was checking the web for info on this car. My late father, Bobby Sykes Sr. built the motors for the Plymouth-Indy project along with Chrysler engineer Pete Hutchison at Keith Black Racing Engines...he also did the motors for the Sam Posey # 77 Trans-Am Challenger project, placing 3rd overall in the series despite the very short time frame to get ready.
A story never told in print or confessed...Art Pollard was doing some testing at Indy when the engine lost oil pressure. The car was parked and the engine pulled and shipped back to KBRE in South Gate California. My dad and crew put the engine on the dyno where it still pulled good horsepower and good oil pressure!
So what happened??
During the photo shoots and the promoting of STP products, Granatelli dumped in a can of cold STP into the dry sump tank, the thick STP slowed down the oil circulation, hence the drop in oil pressure when the car took it's first few laps.
Somewhere in our family archives we have photos of the motor and the Westlake heads.
One of the motors also ended up in a dry lakes car and maybe a hydroplane.
Anyways, I just thought you would like to read a little about the car, since there is not much info on it.
I hope this is of some interest to the forum.
