Greetings to all,
I am pleased to announce the Open Wheel Racing Modeling Forum's (drum roll)...
First Annual Off Season Build-O-Rama!
This is basically my way of trying to motivate you all to keep up with the building during the fall and winter racing downtime. The only rules are: New builds and no fenders! ;D Actual and fantasy builds are welcome. I'd love to see all your progress so feel free to post WIP threads along the way. The green flag drops in three days at the conclusion of the F1 season finale in Abu Dhabi and the deadline is Sunday, March 14th 2010 (the start of the new Indycar and F1 seasons).

Sounds good to me.....But, one question though.
Could it be a kit you have already started to build? We hee, in California were it rarely rains, what is an off-season build?
Sounds like fun and best to you!

Thanks to Greg for the great idea - I have been pumped about getting this one going since he brought up the concept a while back. I'm packing a lot of my stuff so that I can hopefully move but I have a Revell Reynard glue bomb I got off eBay that is in serious need of a total restoration! I'll leave it out and a few part boxes so hopefully I can participate in this but I'm never good with building deadlines C'mon everyone - join in. It is not a contest - we just want everyone to realize how fun it is to build an open wheel model ;D Jordan

I'll give it a try, but seeing how I do all my spary painting outside, it may be a bit of a problem.

What a great idea! I am putting the finishing touches ( you all know how my finishing touches turn out ) on a build, so that will be my first posting of this build-o-rama. I also have two more on the bench and I expect them to be done in about two weeks.
In an almost-related topic, has anyone heard of the new Google photo hosting site called Picassa? If that flies, then I'll give out details so we won't have to pester Greg for hosting our pics.

I have a *special* build that I will be starting shortly with a similar deadline, so I will post WIPs.
I would suggest that anyone who posts include FAOSBOR in the title to identify it as a *First Annual Off Season Build-O-Rama* entry.

Hey chapparal2K, how do you do that scrolling message thing with your sig? I need to do something that cool for this event. Gregg

WooHoo!! I'll get this extravaganza of building started. This is my rendition of the 1989 Pizza Hut Buick Lola. I used the Mac Tools Monogram kit and I have to say, I absolutely loved doing this car. The Indycals graphics really get highlighted nicely with the Tamiya T-16. As much as I have castigated the Monogram kits, this one was pretty easy to do. The rear wing is my biggest complaint. It's much smaller that the AMT kit but the big STP logo and the little MacKenzies still fit, but just barely. OK, I'm done. Who's next? We know Greg has a Provimi in the works so get crackin'. I have two more on the bench but I'll keep one of them a secret. Edit: The engine cover actually fits much better than the pictures indicate. I just didn't push it down enough before I took the pics and I'm too lazy to re-do them.

Okay...This just to prove I can build a car with a rear wing on it!These were built some time ago, but most here think all I build is front engine cars. Well, I do mostly, but this started life as a KMART/Havoline Car and ended up as a 1990 Foyt Lola, thanks to Speedway Graphics Decals for it. The 1987 winner is now in the possession of Big Al. The photos taken today of this beast. My friend on the forum, Slowbuilder cussed me royally after he discovered I used Testors Classic Black to pain t the car, one of the last car models I panted in enamel paint. Best to you Russ

Back to what I like, a front engine STP cat and a rear engine STP carThis is the God Awful Garage 97 Ferguson Novi Kit. Almost like scratch building the sucker, it came with a body, one piece molded wheels and tires and a seat. Everything else came from the spare parts box or was scratch built by me...I only hope the one Lance Sellers is working on is 100 times better than this old turkey! This an original MPC Lotus 56 that was one a glue bomb! This was built BLSC, (before Lance Sellers Conversion.) The only thing I did different was to add vents in the turbine exhaust and cast different and better resin tires. Fred Cady did the decals. Not bad, but I can hardly wait to build a Lotus 56 using Lance's conversion kit. I built this one while writing an article for Motor Racing Replica News before the re-issue of the kit. The plastic was a bilious color of red! I still like the Lotus Turbine kit. Good things can be built from the old turkey! Best to you Russ

Best to you Russ It's not always what you use but how you use it. GAny builds completed during the off season can go in the new section.

That's my kind of sick - I thought it would be funny to build Guerrero's '92 Lola and Sharp's '01 Dallara since I was there for both of there awful "races" from the pole position - 1/4 lap of racing combined! Jordan

Jordan If you go there, you can always do Mario's 1982 car. Cady has decals for that car, I think. Even better, because it's already been done, is Sneva's 1986 car, the Skoal Bandit #33. I have the decals for that car and it's on my long list of future builds.

Didn't Greg Ray do the same thing two years in a row? Have one of the fastest cars only to drift high in the wall and ruin his chance for Indy immortality? Or am I thinking that in '00 and '01 the pole sitters finished last....

The only thing Greg Ray did faster than drive, was disappear. What ever happened to him?

Ok, I'm finally on board. I was going to do the Lola T90, but then I was struck by a bolt of lightning! So, after recovering with an amaretto in hand I came upon the idea of doing the car and driver that set Indy on its ear in 1961. I'll post pix soon of my Sir Jack Brabham Kimberley-Cooper Climax. Sickie that I am I'll start with a toy from Portugal.

Well gang, we've reached the halfway point in the Build-O-Rama. You have another nine weeks to get some projects going and completed. It's been a strong first half so lets keep it going!

As of this past Sunday, there is one month to go. Time to finish up those WIPs. Unless of course you're Chaparral 2K in which case you can probably crank out another three or four more projects by the deadline. G
