I don't mean to bring everyone down, but as we age yet into another year, something stuck me this weekend while admiring my cars. I have a nice collection of cars and some of us have very large collections. When the time comes for me to pass into another light...what about my cars? Why am I even collecting these things? My kids don't really "get it", they really don't dig racing in general, it was "Dads weekend thing" they'll say. So in 5-10 years after I pass it will be forgotten. I thought about donating to a race museum or maybe even a orphanage/ kids hospital for a nice display...but I gotta say, It kinda got me a bit down. All these great memories that I have of the 500..the cars, the drivers....my times with Grandpa and Dad (and Grannys cooler full of fried chicken) at the races that will just fade...just bummed me I guess...sorry to deflate fella's.

I totally agree with you. Once, I go, I have designated my grandson to sell my collection. He wants to keep them and that is fine with me. He gets my indycars and my other grandson wants my basketball collection. That's fine with me and it gives me something to smile about from above.
That's brings up another question? Who will be in heaven when I get there.
Hopefully it will be Jimmy Bryan, Bobby Marshman, Jud Larson, Don Branson, etc. Up above we would still be racing at Trenton, Langhorne, DuQuion anf all of the other great tracks.

I have given my kids a couple friends numbers to call when the time comes. To sell my stash and/or built collection. That being said, my built models are for my pleasure, to enjoy while I can. No one ever sees my display case, so when I'm gone, it doesn't really matter what happens to them.

I just wonder Indydog...with the current state of youth, will there be any collectors left to be interested in this stuff? Every generation seems to cling to nostalgia, but only from there time frame. If my kids wish to sell it all off, its totally cool with me but I feel it would be pennies on the dollar. That's why donating to like maybe a children's hospital still might have that wow factor for someone..just me thinking out loud..

No one ever sees my display case, so when I'm gone, it doesn't really matter what happens to them. this is me as well. All that I build is for me alone. No one else even sees them. If any of you find yourself near Shelbyville Indiana then you’re welcome to tour my personal museum. 🤣 But I fully expect my wife to throw them all out of maybe sell the whole lot for about $1.50. As for racing. I’m have a ton of great memories with my parents, my moms fried chicken in the cooler as well! Spectating at Indy car and sports car races, crewing on a sprint car. It’s all for my own enjoyment so I don’t get down thinking about what’s next for my racing stuff. I just enjoy it all in the moment.

I'm going to be buried with mine along with my Hendrix LPs. But seriously, I'm in the same boat but it's the build that's enjoyable to me much more than showing off the finished model.

I'm not sentimental with my builds. As most know, I like building up my model kit business and taking pictures for my website. I'm way more minimalistic than people realize. The older I get the less clutter I want. I dont "collect" un-built model kits anymore. I'd say my "stash" is no more than 30 unbuilt kits. My model business does make it difficult to stay clutter free though.🤦
If I die....lol oh well! 🤷♂️😂 I probably won't have kids 👶 so someone will need to throw a small estate sale.

This is an interesting topic. We have many of the same thoughts. My two sons want my collection so they can divide it up. Over the years I have sold kits on this forum that I know I will not build and I will continue to do that. While I look at eBay, I don't sell there. I have left information about this site and how to get in touch. I hope to start going to some of the local shows again this year. I would appreciate any information about shows in the Indianapolis area. I hope to show, sell, and give away some things. You never cease to amaze. Jim

Interesting topic as my wife and I visited with an attorney yesterday about setting up our will and how our final wishes will be carried out. My closest friends are model builders and for the most part, they will devide the spoils. That includes all my books, magazines and tools. One of my friends will be designated to help my wife sell a few of my expensive kits that will always worth more than just a few bucks. From what I learned yesterday, i urge my older fellows here to get with an attorney and get everything set up. It only costs the price of a few kits (depending on scale😊)to bring some peace of mind to your spouse and family.

Even in my 40s, I have wondered the same. I got a couple of kits from Craig Miller's collection which has a special sentimentality. Would love to have kits/builds from some of the guys here who have passed.
