What’s your opinion on using etching primer under your standard primer? Taking a car down to bare metal makes me wonder if I should use it. Thanks for any input….Joe

I use it on white metal and photo etch. It definitely helps the paint stick if you have to mask over metal areas. This is the one that I use: Note: The big can of cheap metal primer that they sell at Walmart is too thick (even when decanted, thinned, and airbrushed), will obscure detail, and doesn't work very well.

I've never had any issue with paint on metal. I just use a green scotch brite scuff pad first, clean with grease remover and prime.

That's a GREAT TIP Rob. I didn't know that Mr. Hobby sold etching primer.

The Tamiya Metal Primer 87061 is an excellent metal primer, first it is etching, next its clear and lays down very nicely not burying the detail. I have used it on 1/43 Metal kits under their regular TS paints and also on Photo etch again I like that its clear and doesnt effect the color coat. my 2 cents....Chris

I always use etching primer. Nothing worse than your base coat lifting off with the masking tape.

I always use etching primer for any metal parts. I've used the large spry cans of duplicolor. Green color and very thin so doesn't bury details. Spray it on from the can. I use lacquer primer over it.
