This is another, not restoration, but a resurrection. I got this kit from my friend Patrick, and in fairness, he did warn me. ( I don't know if he started it or someone else did, but I figured I'd try to finish it ). I wanted a T2, so it's a Protar or a transkit, and the transkits are a stupid price. So, while waiting for the Bugatti to arrive, I gave it a shot. This is what I had to start with:
and this:
It seems to be all there. That black thing is Protar's idea of a wiring/plumbing harness. Yuk!

First thing I noticed was that whatever it's painted with, they should have used it on the Space Shuttle. It will not come off!!

Well Paul...that looks like quite the challenge for you. I know you're up for it. This is going to be cool to watch...for sure.

Step 1, I removed the bits and most of the vinyl wiring, gave the engine a very light MigAmmo gunmetal wash
And gave the tub a Mig pigment rub over the aluminum paint, with some fixer: Not as shiny as it should be, but we'll call this one a very well used (and repaired) race car!
The U-joint was broken so I drilled it out and inserted a styrene rod, you won't see it. Lots more of that to come, this plastic is old and so brittle it's unworkable.

Lots of this stuff to do - everything is either broken, or about to be
Transmission repainted (with an engine grime wash) and re-assembled
Coolers and tanks - mostly I stripped and repainted the chrome bits
At this point, if you know your Ferrari's, you will notice parts of the chassis are missing. Apparently Protar figured you didn't need them.

If anyone can do it, you can, Paul! I have a MIB 312T2, will probably never build it since I found a Fujimi 1/20 version. Nearly as much detail with parts that fit (& takes up less room!). If you run aground with this one, maybe mine can move north!

I didn't know Fujimi even made a T2. I think it was another movie bandwagon they jumped on, a T2 for "Rush" , like the GT40 kits for "Ford vs Ferrari". They are pretty pricey if you can find one. They DID come with rain tires, tho.

Oops, I stand corrected! The 312T2 is by Hasegawa! Still a great kit (& pricey).

Sometimes it's just easier to make a new one than try to repair the old one:
The body shell has a coat of white paint, which only comes off with some careful rubbing with lacquer thinners. I have no idea what the red is that's underneath:

Cool. Never noticed that kit before. It not be cheap! Very interesting. Odd that they tooled that in 1/20 considering their whole line of F1 cars is 1/24. I would love to get my grubby hands on one of those.

The 1/20 Hasegawa F1 kits that I am aware of are Ferrari 312T, 312T2, and Lotus 79. Some (or maybe all) of them come in more than one version (for instance, the T2 comes in a Japanese GP version with rain tires and a Monaco version). I have one version of each and they are all superb kits.

So the engine compartment pretty much together, and the roll bar installed according to the instructions and the mounting points on the chassis. It will get broken, but I don't care as I already know the body won't fit over it, it's at least 3/8ths too far forward.
And I have this to build a rear suspension from. The gold paint will not come off.

Those parts MIGHT be painted gold, but they are definitely molded in gold in my kit.

What colour is the body molded in? I'm down to white and red but the red will come off with white under it.

All body parts are molded in red except the inner cockpit piece that forms the inside of the large vents. I see that part in the pic of parts in the box.

Mine, the body shell is definitely molded in white, the bottom half has a red coating, like a dye, it can be rubbed through with thinners, never seen anything like it. The gold bits are molded in a brownish gold plastic, these hubs etc have a gold paint applied to them, some sort of enamel. Good news is I can paint over it. And the exhausts are molded in yellow, don't ask me why!

The front suspension, almost everything is broken, worse still, the mounting points on the chassis are also broken / missing, so no reference. I have a Tamiya 312T parts kit, but it's completely incompatible, so I gave up and decided to just scratch out something that will look like the real thing, most of it covered by the nose cone anyway.
Lots of this going on - I used tubing with a steel wire inside for re-inforcement:
So I ended up with this:
Lots of toothpics and no screws!!

Restoration = money saved; money saved = time spent, therefore restoration = money saved & time spent. This equation allows us to put rare, pricey kits in our display case.
It looks like you've gotten a handle on this one, being a basket case might be a blessing this time as it lessens your hesitation to modify and make do.

Thanks guys. All of that was up to Christmas, and then the Bugatti finally arrived. I've been playing with both.
