Finished this kit up this morning. As usual, skip below to get to the pictures. The rare yellow McLaren. I couldn't resist building it in the yellow livery because I'll never have a chance to build another yellow McLaren, and also I'm no Prost fan. Prost had the normal McLaren livery. This was a one race livery they put on Keke Rosberg's car at the Portuguese Grand Prix in 86 to promote the brand new M@r1b0r0 Lights. It never appeared in any other practices or races. Keke went out early with mechanical issues. Picked this kit up a year or so ago and includes both the yellow livery and the normal fluro red livery. The box says Platz Nunu but the trees all say Beemax. I've never built any kits from any of those companies so I had no idea what to expect. It actually built up really nice. I enjoyed the build quite a bit. Some nice details molded in, fit was good and the decal sheet was solid. Even included the Tag-Porsche lettering on the valve covers, so that made it easy to make those look nice. I just used the kit seatbelt decals, a little flat, but better than a blank seat, and I just added some quick and easy ignition wiring. A nice little engine model, but research photos show it to be 90 percent black. Not much call to add details there. I really don't have any complaints about the kit. The only issues are down to my own inadequacies as a builder. Even though I applied the decals to each wing end plate on different days and set them aside to dry, I still managed to fat thumb one of the decals and roll it under itself. No surprise there, I'm my own worst enemy. Likewise I think I must have nudged the Tag Hauer decal on the windscreen as it is also no longer straight. Big facepalms there. However, those mistakes not withstanding, the decals lay down nicely and go over shapes fairly nicely. It also has some raised lines to help you line the chevrons up. Naturally, I missed and probably should have just sanded them off, but oh well. I also picked up some M@r1b0r0 fill in decals to finish it off. I really enjoyed this build, if you read all that, then thank you and I'm sorry. LOL. Now the pictures.

This models is not just about the superb finish and detail for me.
I went to that race. Jeez. The memories came flooding back looking over the pictures.
Great job.
Went out to Estoril from London on my own for the race. Had just started working at a graphic design studio in the spring so finally had some money to spend. Stayed with cousins in the suburb of Belem and got a lift to the race. No one else wanted to come! Watched from the hill inside the last half of the track/lap. The Mclaren did stand out for as long as it ran. Didn't have the word 'Lights' on the car so those of us talking about it were a bit confused as there were no follow up marketing stands or posters or anything where I was. Must have kept that over by the grandstand or something.
Went to Estoril many times after that 1986 trip with ever growing group of mates for as long as the race was on the calendar. This beauty has got me going back thru the photo albums. Track and tourist stuff.
Thanks for sharing.

Got this one in my stash too. I’ve often wondered about using the yellow decals or trying to match the paint. You’ve certainly shown me that the decals are doable. Nice job!

I think we all have those memories of races gone by and it’s always great to hear them from other people. From the research I did on the car it seems that everyone was a bit confused by the livery and perhaps that’s why it went away. I thought it was a pretty cool look though.

Looks great! I've never seen that livery. Thank you! It was a one off, and though I had seen pictures of it on the interwebs before, I never thought I’d get the chance to build it. Was stoked to see this kit.

Paul Erlendson Thanks Paul ! The decals work really well. I, too went back and forth between trying paint or going with the decals. I decided to attempt the decals thinking if I made a mess of it I would just strip them and tape and paint the yellow. They lay down pretty well. I used mark fit strong over the worst contours and it went pretty ok.

Hey Kyle....where did you find the kit? I would like to try it on for a future build.... if it can still be found.

Hey Kyle....where did you find the kit? I would like to try it on for a future build.... if it can still be found. Gary, I actually got mine from a hobby shop in Ohio. The nunu release is 2020 so surely there are some still out there. The also there appear to be Aoshima and Beemax releases of the 84 MP4/2. I think it would be nice to track one of those down. A good kit that was nice to build even if it is 90% black. Niki Lauda would be a cool name to have on the shelf though.

Indeed, I had a glance through the eBay listings as well. Looks like the only difference to the Beemax/aoshima ones are it being the older spec. So different rear wing and markings. No yellow livery of course.

No yellow livery of course. The Beemax kits come as either a MP4/2 (original rear wing) or a 2B or 2C (simpler rear wing) so you should check before you buy if you're fussy about race specific accuracy.
Also the 2B/C cars didn't run Michelin tires so they have a different suspension spec than the original.

Thank you for the Link Paul. I did order one. It's coming from Japan. I does have both red & yellow decal sheets. I need to try and find a few ref pics of that car.

Kyle...where did you get the M@r1b0r0 markings for that car? They don't seem to be in the kit.

Ah, so there are more options than in the nunu re-release. The kit I built was 2C only which was fine as I was wanting to build that yellow one anyway.

This one is always so interesting. A "don't adjust your TV" look. I always wondered why this brand never did other colors on their F1 and IndyCars.
Looks great body on or off, display with pride!

Jordan Thanks Jordan! I also agree that it’s odd they never did any other colors with so many brand options to choose from. And, (selfishly as a modeler) it would’ve been cool to have some more special liveries. I’m going to have more than one with fluorescent orange chevrons by the end of my building.

Very nice build of a very unique subject. I never could get into this car because the graphic designer on me would never do yellow on white like that, but this car has its place in history.

Thank you Michael! I can totally understand where you’re coming from. It sort of doesn’t work. But for some reason I kind of like it. And as you say, a small slice of history.
