This is a rebuild of the kit that I bought from Brian. Slow going as it takes a while to figure out what is what. The rebuilt tub: The rebuilt front steering: I have started the engine and rear suspension, but figuring out the pipes is beating me up!

Hey Mark, glad to see you've gotten a start on this bad boy! Really makes me feel better selling my kits to people that are actually building them. Looks great so far, I'm sure you'll get it all figured out.

One of the prettiest Lotus F1 cars ever. Looking forward to you working on this one.

Glad you guys like it. Brian, like I told you, I'm a builder not a collector and I'm glad you sold it to me. More progress... Engine started: Rebuilt rear suspension. Lots of work here... had to pin most of the parts and the drive axles were missing. I drilled through the discs and use 3/16 plastic tube to make a new axle. I still need to make boots for the ends.

A Lotus 72 is a bit of a nightmare to build in any scale (including 1:1). Good luck with this, looks like you're winning so far!

That's really looking good Mark. What are you going to make the Axle boots out of?...If you don't mind me asking.

That's gorgeous! An update on the build. Having a hard time figuring out the exhaust... this is what I have to work with: Figuring out which pipe went where took me a LONG time. They don't match side to side, but I got them on! The finished product. I had to make a few "concessions" given it is a glue bomb, but it came out ok.

A quick mock up of the chassis. Also having trouble with the decals. This is the nose after 4 coats of Solvaset. I did find some aftermarket decals at TB Decals & Models. About $50 with shipping so I need to make sure I can't get these to work.

I'd go with the TB, that's too nice a kit to not splurge on.
You've built the Tamiya kit I believe, you know having the exhaust pipes numbered doesn't help at all!!
Looks good so far.

Well, that's gone to hell. I decided to coat the decals with a clear coat and see if that helps. Obviously not! I used this, over Testors Gloss Black enamel. The result, I don't have any idea what happened! I will definitely be ordering some new decals! (This kit is going to be the death of me.)

This is why I never use testors enamel or an unfamiliar clear coat.
I almost always use Tamiya spray lacquer whenever possible. And whenever I'm using unfamiliar decals that want to clear coat I use testors lacquer clear.
I try to avoid enamel as much a possible. Especially testors enamel
Lacquer for the win.

I sometimes use this version
It eats some decals so care is required, but it's never reacted on paint (so far).
This is what the finish looks like applied over Tamiya gold acrylic
Or I use Testors lacquer like Calvin but it's hard to find.

While I work on saving the nose, I wanted to let Brian know that I have made progress on the rest of the build. I managed to find another set of decals and I have most of the chassis done. Pardon the lousy photo, I took it with my phone.

Thanks for the update, Mark! I was wondering how this was coming along....or not. Glad to see some significant progress. It will be an impressive addition to your collection, for sure!
P.S.- It sure makes thinning my collection easier when guys like you and Paul just jump right on them and build them up!

As hard as I tried, I was unable to save the nose of the 72d. I tried my usual stripper (Easy Off) but it didn't work. So I went down to Menards and got the weakest stripper I could find. (it was for removing paint from hard wood floors) It attacked the plastic, the result... Yea... ok. Lucky for me, I was able to obtain a new nose section. Damn thing cost me $65... Let's try this again.

I am finally calling this one done! There are a couple of parts that I still need to source though. It's a decent kit, but not worth what it cost me to build. Although, most of that was my own doing. If I had just spent what I paid for it, then it would have been a hell of a deal. I ended up spending close to $100 just to fix my screwups.

Hey Mark, that looks great! I know it was a rough road, but the results look to be worth the struggle. I'm glad someone got some use out of that old thing! 1/8 kits are SO impressive when done.

You are right, Brian......1/8 scale kits are VERY IMPRESSIVE when finished. This one is flat AWESOME Mark. Great recovery and sticking to your guns. It paid off big time.

Looks great Mark - sucks that you had the issue with the nose but at least you were able to replace it. For future reference for stripping I highly recommend Testors Easy Lift Off. Soak the part overnight, next day the paint peels right off with no plastic or resin damage. Works on Tamiya paint. I only wish I had seen that at the time.

Thanks guys. It really was worth it in the end. It is a unique model that you don't see very often.
I also want to thank Brian for selling it to me... he gave me a great price!
